The 2017 Sunline Stakes is the major support act at Moonee Valley Racecourse tonight and our insider betting tips plus the latest odds on the weight-for-age clash for fillies and mares are detailed below.
Nine remain in the mix for the $200,000 Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m), the weight-for-age mile showdown set to run as Moonee Valley Race 6 at 9:00pm (AEDT) on the William Reid Stakes Night card.
There are four single-figure fancies in the latest Sunline Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au led by the firming $2.20 favourite I Am A Star.
This Group 1 winning I Am Invincible filly beat the older mares over this distance at Flemington in the Myer Classic last spring and won again third-up on March 11 in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m).
She gets the weight advantage at WFA and is in flying form, Dean Yendall retaining the ride as she looks set to peak at her fourth autumn run getting out to the 1600m.
Out to stop the flying three-year-old are the likes of John Thompson’s Group 1 winner First Seal ($4.80), Godolphin improver Circular ($6.50) coming off the Matron Stakes win, Turbo Miss ($9.50) with the rails run and the Lindsay Park-trained 2014 ATC Oaks winner Rising Romance ($11).
So will the short-priced favourite salute or is there value tipping an upset Sunline Stakes result this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival?
1st
#10 I Am A Star ($2.20)
Really is hard to tip against the favourite who is proven in Group 1 company over the mile in Melbourne against the older mares. Yendall aboard again here after the Kewney Stakes win over 1400m, fourth-up will be peaking and is back from 55.5kg to 54kg here at WFA. Versatile and still has scope for improvement. Lots of boxes ticked.
2nd
#1 Rising Romance ($11)
At her best form this now six-year-old daughter of Ekraar enjoyed an ATC Oaks win and placed second in a Melbourne Cup. She hasn’t won since February of 2015 and hasn’t won in Australia since the 2014 Oaks. Last autumn she was competitive in races like the Australian Cup (3rd) and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (4th), with a Memsie Stakes (2nd) placing behind Black Heart Bart last August also proving she was still capable of big runs. Looked back to that sort of form first-up when runner-up in the Frances Tressady Stakes and shouldn’t be discounted here at the double-figures.
3rd
#6 Turbo Miss ($9.50)
Frances Tressady Stakes winner comes into this in great form for record-breaker Darren Weir. Up from 54kg to 57kg so needs to handle the weight rise, but the rails is often the place to be at the Valley and she’s drawn a treat. Hasn’t finished out of the money in her three runs this time in and loves the track (3-0-2-1). Just needs to carry the weight and get the distance to be competitive.
