Australasian Oaks 2017 Field: Kenedna Draws 3

An ideal barrier three draw in a capacity 2017 Australasian Oaks field has seen the Darren Weir-trained Kenedna retain her favouritism for the Group 1 at Morphettville Racecourse this weekend.

Set to run as Morphettville Race 6 at 3:24pm (local) as the major support act of Robert Sangster Stakes Day, this season’s $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2010m) has attracted the full 16 starters plus four emergencies.

Leading the post-field Australasian Oaks odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.75 to secure her third win on the trot is Weir’s in-form and well-drawn daughter of Not A Single Doubt Kenedna.

Jockey John Allen retains the ride on the favourite after guiding her to back-to-back stakes wins in Adelaide this season, most recently overcoming barrier 14 of 17 to take out the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) on April 22.

Weir won the Australasian Oaks a few years back with May’s Dream (2014) who came off a third in the same lead-up and has a huge hope to take out the race in 2017 as Kenedna looks to salute for the punters for the first time since Weir’s champion.

Kenedna is out to be the first Australasian Oaks favourite to salute for the punters since the fellow Weir-trained May’s Dream in 2014

Close second elect in the updated Australasian Oaks betting markets this autumn at $4.50 is the Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart who is also out to extend a winning streak.

Jumping from barrier five on Saturday with Kerrin McEvoy aboard, Sebring filly Egg Tart has won her past four starts on the trot earning a notable rise in class this weekend as she steps out in Group company for the first time.

Rounding out the single figure fancies in the current markets on the set weights clash at $7.50 after the Schweppes Oaks acceptances is Toffee Nose.

Drawn out wide in barrier 13 the Danny O’Brien-trained daughter of Toorak Toff comes off a last start win over the distance in Melbourne.

Another last start winner at more generous odds is the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained New Approach filly Sword Of Light ($11) who has won her past two on the trot over the Caulfield mile ahead of her maiden 2000m run on Saturday.

NZ Oaks third placegetter Savvy Dreams is out to atone for her last start 10th to Kenedna in the Auraria Stakes when debuting down under, while Lindsay Park’s Crown Oaks runner-up Harlow Gold has the second outside alley to overcome.

Harlow Gold ran third in Rosehill’s Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) two back and is back down in distance after her fourth behind Bonneval at Randwick in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) last time out.

Other notable hopes include Chris Beig’s Dash For Cash filly With A Bit Of Dash coming off back-to-back seconds at the track behind Kenedna and the Auraria Stakes third placegetter Sebring Dream who is another Lindsay Park-trained runner.
