Music Magnate Leads 2017 Doomben 10,000 Nominations

The Bjorn Baker-trained Music Magnate is nominated to defend his title in the 2017 Doomben 10,000, early entries for the opening Group 1 of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival now out.

Last season Baker’s Written Tycoon gelding posted his maiden elite level success in the weight-for-age classic and Music Magnate is back this winter heading the 40 nominations taken for the revamped $700,000 Group 1 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10,000 (1200m).

Music Magnate won the race when it was contested over 1350m, but is the likely Doomben 10,000 betting favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au in 2017 to win the feature again over the decreased distance this month.

Apache Cat in 2008-09 was the last back-to-back Doomben 10,000 winner and Music Magnate ran the ideal lead-up to be the next winning Eagle Farm’s Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) last weekend.

Two three-year-olds have won the Doomben 10,000 in the past five years with the filly Sea Siren (2012) and Peter Snowden’s colt Epaulette (2013).

There are seven three-year-old Doomben 10,000 nominees this season led by the Snowden-trained Russian Revolution.

Russian Revolution is nominated to be the first 3YO to win the Doomben 10,000 since the fellow Snowden-trained Epaulette in 2013

The consistent Snitzel colt posted a Group 1 win in Sydney’s The Galaxy (1100m) two back before finishing sixth to Chautauqua in a brave Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) run at Randwick on April 1.

Snowden has also nominated for smart four-year-old Redzel who ran second to his younger stablemate in The Galaxy before winning the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) on April 15.

Hall Mark Stakes runner-up Counterattack is another Doomben 10,000 entry this winter out to hand Chris Waller with his second win in three years after success with Boban in 2015.

It has been a while between drinks for four-year-old Redoute’s Choice stallion Counterattack who hasn’t won a race since the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) at Doomben Racecourse in May last year.

Waller has also nominated for fellow four-year-old Japonisme, the out-of-form gelding out to atone for a number of unplaced autumn runs in the wet this season.

Japonisme was third to Malaguerra in the Group 1 BTC Cup over 1200m at Doomben last year, but hasn’t won since his lead-up into that when beating Counterattack home narrowly in the 2016 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint.

This season’s Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint was won on April 8 by the Lindsay Park-trained Derryn, the Hinchinbrook colt entered for a Doomben 10,000 run.

Other notable entries include unlikely final acceptor Black Heart Bart for Darren Weir and the Matthew Dale-trained Fell Swoop out to improve on his sixth to Music Magnate in last year’s Doomben 10,000 results.

The official Doomben 10,000 field & barriers are set for release on May 10, 2017.

See below for the full Doomben 10,000 2017 nominations before heading to Ladbrokes.com.au for updated Brisbane Group 1 racing odds on all the upcoming features.
