One of the key black-type features running at Morphettville Racecourse on South Australian Derby Day this weekend is the 2017 Adelaide Guineas, betting for which is firmly led by the flying Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Petition.
Due to jump as Morphettville Race 6 at 3:50pm (ACST), the $150,000 Listed Adelaide Guineas (1600m) field will now feature three of the five emergencies after the early scratchings of Silvera (20), So You Too (22) and Clockwork Orange (21) due to wide barrier draws.
Updated Adelaide Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au on the new look line-up is all about Petition who has been well-backed right in from $2.35 to $2.10.
Due to be ridden by Craig Williams, the well-bred Foxwedge filly from Victoria has won her past two starts on the trot including a nice 1400m effort at Flemington on Anzac Day with Williams in the saddle.
She is up over a mile for the first time in the Adelaide Guineas on Saturday, but is flying and looks like she’ll run out the distance no worries.
Despite the capacity 18 starter size of the field, just one other runner in the three-years-old set weights clash is currently under double-figures for the win with some money on Milwaukee ($7).
Michael Moroney prepares the fellow Victorian raider out of Flemington, the son of Fastnet Rock out to improve on a last start fifth over the Flemington mile on April 25 in the wet.
Prior to that the gelding enjoyed back-to-back wins including the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m) where he defeated Sword Of Light by over two lengths.
He has had a look at the 1600m now and will be better for the experience, will relish getting a firmer track than the Heavy (8) he encountered last time out and the form of his lead-up race was franked when the winner Egg Tart came to Adelaide to win last Saturday’s Group 1 Australasian Oaks.
If the two best in Adelaide Guineas betting don’t fire on Saturday there is value galore to be had by the punters in South Australia.
Of the longer-priced hopes the next best fancied after an upset include the Tony McEvoy-trained Foxwedge gelding Fox Hall ($11), Soju Warrior ($11) and Spanner Head ($13).
Fox Hall put the writing on the wall last start winning the Listed Nitschke Stakes (1400m), which he won by a length as a $19 outsider from barrier 13 of 14.
Jockey Damien Thornton retains the ride again this weekend with Fox Hall out in double digits again.
Soju Warrior gets a better run from barrier two with Joe Bowditch to ride the Mark Kavanagh-trained New Approach gelding over from Melbourne on the back of a third over 1800m at Caulfield on April 29.
Spanner Head is another danger if she gets the right run from out wide, the Archie Alexander-trained Helmet filly last seen crossing second to Egg Tart over the mile at Flemington.
