The South Australian Derby 2017 headlines the Morphettville racing action on Saturday, betting tips and the updated odds on the three-years-old staying showdown detailed below.
There’s plenty of local and visiting interstate talent in this season’s $600,000 Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) field and markets at Ladbrokes.com.au feature three hopes under $10.
Sitting top of the South Australian Derby odds at $3.30 is the consistent Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Zacinto gelding Odeon from Flemington.
He has his second run at the Morphettville track after crossing second in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) two back before a nice 2000m win at Caulfield that has him tipped to run out the extra metres of the Derby.
The dangers are market mover Ruthven ($6) who is drawn out wide but who was impressive in April’s ATC Derby running two lengths back fourth, and Netherfield ($6) for last weekend’s Robert Sangster Stakes winning trainer Mick Price.
Earlier we published a comprehensive South Australian Derby 2017 Form Guide & Betting Preview, our insider tips on the race based on the facts and stats uncovered listed below.
1st
#12 Volatile Mix ($9.50)
Going for the value in the markets and tipping flying Victorian trainer Darren Weir to go back-to-back in the SA Derby after he took it out last year with Howard Be Thy Name. This Pentire colt was last seen crossing only a length back fourth in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2030m) at the track and the further he goes the better he’ll be. Drawn wide, but time to overcome the alley with plenty saluting from out wide in recent years. John Allen is on, has winning form on the horse and in this race from 2016.
2nd
#2 Waging War ($14)
Big price offered on this ultra-consistent local from the stables of Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas. Clare Lindop has the ride on the son of Rebel Raider – the horse who won the 2009 edition of the SA Derby. Comes off three straight wins, including the Chairman’s Stakes, and is after the double achieved by Howard Be Thy Name 12 months ago.
3rd
#3 Grand Chancellor ($12)
If tipping the local form to stack-up, hard to leave out this Phillip Stokes-trained Savabeel colt whose record reads first-second-first-second leading up to this. Comes off the traditional lead-up with a Port Adelaide Guineas win over Odeon two back before the second in the Chairman’s. Needs to run out the distance, but gets every chance from gate two with Noel Callow retaining the ride.
