Queensland Day Stakes Winner Good Standing Too Good

A step-up in grade next race during the winter in Brisbane is likely on the cards for the James Cummings-trained Good Standing after the colt’s smart win over the locals in the 2017 Queensland Day Stakes at Doomben.

The Sydney-based son of Artie Schiller was one of the best in a tight betting market for the $100,000 Listed Queensland Day Stakes (1350m) on Doomben 10,000 Day.

Chasing his first win of the year, the Group 2 winner and Group 1 performer travelled up to the sunshine state second-up after being beaten under two lengths by the winner Shazee Lee for his seventh in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) a fortnight back.

Ridden by local hoop Damian Browne, Good Standing got into a lovely position fourth after settling as the Tony Gollan-trained I’m A Rippa led the Queensland Day Stakes field around.

As the home turn approached, Browne peeled out three or four wide on the interstate raider and once in the straight Good Standing went straight past his rivals going for the line.

Charging home for his first win since Caulfield’s Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) in the spring, Good Standing held a notable margin over anther Gollan runner, Real Saga filly Sylpheed, who ran on late to snare second after her close sixth in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) only last weekend.

Rounding out the trifecta in third was the pacesetter I’m A Rippa who held on to finish in the money.

The $150,000 Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1400m) at Eagle Farm in a fortnight could be a nice next-up option for Good Standing to continue his successful raid on the winter riches in Queensland.
