Lindsey Smith’s returning Group 1 winner Scales Of Justice is clear favourite in Belmont Sprint 2017 betting to get the job done first-up in Perth this weekend.
Set to run as Belmont Race 7 at 3:55pm (AWST), this season’s $150,000 Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) has attracted a smart field of the state’s best gallopers.
Sitting top of the line-up but drawn the far outside barrier (12 of 12) is Scales Of Justice who is the firming favourite paying $2.60 in the Belmont Sprint odds.
The Not A Single Doubt four-year-old was last seen running a devastatingly close second to Stratum Star at Ascot on December 3 rounding out his stellar summer preparation in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m).
That followed three straight wins at the track, most notably his nearly three length victory over Good Project in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m).
The gun gelding has enjoyed back-to-back Lark Hill trial wins in May leading up to his resuming run in the Belmont Sprint field on Saturday.
A first-up flyer, Scales Of Justice has enjoyed two wins, two seconds and a third from his five returning runs to date.
He’s also got plenty of form at Belmont and is undefeated with a two-from-two record at the track and distance.
There are just two other single-figure hopes out to stop the hard-to-beat favourite with the rails-drawn Rock Magic ($4) and Pounamu ($8) also drawn well in gate three.
Chris Gangemi’s Redoute’s Choice seven-year-old Rock Magic was in excellent form during the summer including finishing under a length back for third as a $26 roughie behind Takedown in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).
He had two interstate runs in the autumn at elite level running fourth in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley before being outclassed for a second last effort (14th) behind Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
Last time out the evergreen veteran returned home and also to winning form taking out the traditional Belmont Sprint lead-up with a one length victory in the Group 3 Roma Cup (1200m) – held this year at Ascot Racecourse.
He is now out to do the Roma Cup – Belmont Sprint double last completed by Luckygray (2012).
Saturday marks Rock Magic’s 15th run at Belmont where he boasts six wins, three seconds and two thirds to date.
Pounamu is another in-form Roma Cup graduate, the Alan Mathews-trained Authorized grey having finished one and a half lengths back fourth to Rock Magic on May 20.
Prior to that the consistent five-year-old was in top form posting four straight wins during the summer and he’s finished top three in all runs at Belmont to date.
If the favourites don’t fire there could be plenty of value in the markets with some livewire double-figure chances including the Grant & Alana Williams-trained distance specialist Disposition ($11) and the flying three-year-old War Chant gelding Variation ($12) coming off successive
