2017 Tattersall’s Tiara Field: Favourites Draw Wide

A number of the key chances in the final Group 1 of the season have suffered a blow with wide barriers in the Tattersall’s Tiara 2017 field at Doomben Racecourse on the weekend.

Due to run as Doomben Race 7 at 3:57pm (AEST), this season’s $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m) attracted the capacity for the track with 16 starters plus five emergencies.

Leading the pre and post-field Tattersall’s Tiara betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is last start Stradbroke Handicap runner-up In Her Time.

Benjamin Smith’s multiple Group 2 winning Time Thief mare was brave in defeat at the same track and distance two weeks ago in the feature race of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival going down a quarter-length to Impending.

The four-year-old is now back against a field of her own kind and is at $3 in the Tattersall’s Tiara odds to join Srikandi (1st in 2015) and Melito (2nd in 2010) as the most recent winners to come out of a Stradbroke run.

In Her Time drew barrier 16 in the Tattersall’s Tiara, but will come into 13 with the emergencies out, just one wider that the gate she jumped from last start.

Other key contenders suffering a double-digit Tattersall’s Tiara barrier draw include Bonny O’Reilly (17 into 12) and Eckstein (14 into 11).

Recent Tattersall’s Tiara history shows however that a wide gate may not be all that problematic with three of the past five winners jumping from double digits.

The latest of those was Srikandi (15 of 15) two years back when the event ran at the Gold Coast.

Bonny O’Reilly and Eckstein both currently pay $8 to win having impressed in their recent lead-ups.

Jason Collett comes back on O’Reilly four-year-old Bonny O’Reilly having ridden her to victory two back over 1200m at Doomben before Noel Callow rode Bjorn Baker’s mare for her Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) third on June 10.

Eckstein is a Corey Brown mount on Saturday, Kurt Goldman’s last start Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1300m) winning filly at Eagle Farm out to be the first three-year-old Tattersall’s Tiara winner since Cosmic Endeavour (2014).

One of the big winners barrier-wise for Saturday, Prompt Response, occupies the second line of Tatt’s Tiara betting paying $6.50 to hand co-trainer Gai Waterhouse her second win in the race.

Waterhouse won in 2014 with the aforementioned filly Cosmic Endeavour and her Beneteau filly Prompt Response has had the ideal lead-up.

The in-form youngster was runner-up in two Group 3 races in New South Wales earlier this prep before winning her Doomben debut two weeks ago in the Dane Ripper.

Cosmic Endeavour was also the last to do the double that Prompt Response, drawn gate eight but possibly into six, is well fancied to do this weekend.

Other notable hopes include Lindsay Park’s recent stakes winner at the track Miss Gunpowder, the Kris Lees-trained Danish Twist and Egyptian Symbol in the second widest alley.
