One of the key support acts at Doomben on Tattersall’s Tiara Day this weekend is the G.H. Mumm Open Quality 2017 for the milers and it is a wide open affair in the black-type clash this season.
Set to run as Doomben Race 6 at 3:17pm (AEST), the $100,000 Listed G.H. Mumm Open Quality (1615m) has attracted a small field of just a dozen hopefuls.
Nearly half of them are under double-figures in the latest G.H. Mumm Open Quality odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au including the current $3.30 favourite Man Of His Word.
Drawn gate five with Jeff Lloyd riding, the Bruce Hill-trained four-year-old is prepared at the Gold Coast and races at Doomben for the third time on the trot this campaign.
He was outclassed on Heavy (8) going first-up behind mudlark Jungle Edge in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) before improving on a firmer course over his pet distance when fourth in the Listed Spear Chief (1630m) on June 3.
Winner of December’s Listed Brisbane Handicap over the Doomben mile with Lloyd aboard late last year, Man Of His Word should be peaking third-up here and getting in on 54.5kg could be hard to hold out.
The danger according to the latest G.H. Mumm Quality betting markets paying $3.90 is the 60.5kg top weight Religify drawn out in gate 11.
Sydney’s Chris Waller and Hugh Bowman combine with this Choisir six-year-old and no doubt he is the class galloper in the field.
He has won two from three this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival including a smart effort on June 10 in the Listed The Wayne Wilson (1600m) over this track and distance.
Carting 57kg with Bowman aboard, this is a challenge with the extra weight, but he is in flying form and loves the firmer going so if the tempo is on he’s the one to beat.
Occupying the third line of betting is 54kg lightweight Payroll ($4.50) for Cranbourne horseman Richard Laming.
The Not A Single Doubt mare comes off a win in the Listed Spear Chief, the race Man Of His Word placed fourth in, which she won carrying 56.5kg by a neck.
It was a brave effort from the Magic Millions Trophy third placegetter over 2200m, the versatile four-year-old set to relish the drop in weight returning to the track / distance with Jim Byrne riding on Saturday.
Elle Lou ($7.50) is also being kept safe in the markets getting a seven kilo turnaround on the weight she met Religify carrying in The Wayne Wilson.
She was only weighted a half-kilo under him that day and ran a brave fifth three lengths back, but the Waller-trained Snitzel mare has the chance to turn the tables on her stablemate with the weight advantage this weekend.
The early market mover meanwhile is Hopfgarten ($9.50 into $8) drawn gate three with Corey Brown to ride Rob Heathcote’s local Mossman six-year-old.
Hopfgarten is down in grade after finishing under five lengths back 13th to Impending in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) a fortnight ago.
Up to a mile for the first time this prep will suit the Doomben specialist, but he does come up from 53.5kg to 59kg in the Listed event.
