2017 Glasshouse Handicap Field Features Monsieur Gustave

Local Sunshine Coast horseman Darryl Hansen has accepted for his last start Eye Liner Stakes winning sprinter Monsieur Gustave to continue his winter bid at home this weekend in the Glasshouse Handicap 2017 field.

Due to run as Race 7 at 3:57pm (AEST) on the nine-race Caloundra Cup Day card, this season’s $175,000 Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) has drawn a final field of 15 hopefuls.

Among the key final acceptors is in-form Al Maher four-year-old Monsieur Gustave who was last seen hanging on in a narrow upset win as a $15 shot at Ipswich on June 17 in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m).

Monsieur Gustave rises a kilo to 55kg this weekend chasing the winter stakes double and is at his pet distance again boasting an imposing record of four wins and a second from his eight previous runs over the metres.

A jockey is yet to be confirmed for Monsieur Gustave in the Glasshouse Handicap as his Eye Liner winning hoop Tiffani Brooker is already committed to ride the Stuart Kendrick-trained Banda Spice.

Four-year-old Show A Heart mare Banda Spice ran fourth to Bonny O’Reilly two back in the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes (1200m) as a $61 roughie beaten under two lengths.

She backed-up at Ipswich in the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) running a brave third behind Maternal with Brooker aboard and looks right in the mix again on the weekend.

Saturday is the 16th Sunshine Coast start for the local hope who has five wins and three thirds at the track to date, Banda Spice drawn well in gate eight on 54kg.

The other best out of the Eye Liner Stakes results a fortnight ago in the mix for the Glasshouse Handicap this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival is runner-up In His Stride.

Also Queensland trained by Toowoomba horseman Rex Lipp, the Rothesay four-year-old was beaten the barest of margins at Ipswich and gets the chance to turn the tables this weekend with Paul Hammersley retaining the ride.

In His Stride is one of the big winners in the Glasshouse Handicap barrier draw coming up trumps with barrier three after his tough run from out wide (14 of 16) last start.

The Group 1 performed gelding also meets his last start conqueror better in the weights for the rematch on Saturday staying on the 54kg minimum.

Heading the Glasshouse Handicap weights meanwhile is the Brett Cavanough-trained The Monstar (59kg) who is a dual acceptor across two states for Saturday.

Last start winner of the Listed June Stakes (1100m) on a Heavy (10) Randwick track, the Scone-based six-year-old needs a wet track to perform his best.

Cavanough has accepted The Monstar then for both the Glasshouse Handicap in Queensland as well as Sydney’s $150,000 Listed Civic Stakes (1350m), where the horse is the 59.5kg top weight, at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

He will leave the decision until the last minute, with the softer of the two tracks to be the determining factor.

Other notable hopes include the Kelly Doughty-trained defending Glasshouse Handicap winner Flamboyer who was only a half-length off Monsieur Gustave in the blanket finish at Ipswich when fourth in the Eye Liner last start and the in-form Desleigh Forster-trained Too Good To Refuse.

Four-year-old Rothesay stallion Too Good To Refuse raced at Doomben last weekend finishing just under two lengths third behind Burning Passion in the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m).

Jockey Robbie Fradd retains the ride this weekend with the horse set to enjoy the step-up 200m in distance boasting winning form up to a mile.
