Thirteen three-year-olds have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s Listed Belmont Classic (2200m) in Perth; offering punters terrific value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Reigning WA Derby winner Gatting remains a clear and justifiably $1.85 favourite in 2017 Belmont Classic betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Western Temple and Jackpot Prince; currently sharing the second line at $6 quotes.
Will Gatting justify his odds-on favouritism, or will one of his talented rivals pull off the upset of the day at Belmont?
1st
Western Temple ($6)
Western Temple has the makings of an outstanding stayer and he is over the odds at his current $6 quote in Belmont Classic betting markets. The three-year-old got into plenty of trouble during the running of the Listed Aquanita Stakes (2000m) a fortnight ago, but still worked to the line well to finish second. Prior to that run, he placed second amongst notable company in the Amelia Park Handicap (1400m) and third in the Listed Belmont Guineas (1600m). A step up in trip will suit, he has the notable advantage of William Pike in the saddle and he should find a far better position in transit this time from the rails draw.
2nd
Gatting ($1.85)
Gatting returned to winning form in a minor race over 2100m last weekend, but he faces a step back up in class this weekend and might not have the improvement required to win the race. Winner of both the Listed Melvista Stakes (2200m) and Group 2 WA Derby (2400m) in autumn, the Hard Spun gelding clearly required a run when eighth over 1200m first-up this time, but responded well for second in the Belmont Guineas and fourth in the Aquanita Stakes. He should find a good position off the early pace from barrier 11 and his ability could prove the difference.
3rd
Fontainebleau ($7.50)
Talented filly Fontainebleau has also found terrific form this time and will be tough to beat under the conditions of the Belmont Classic. The Alfred Nobel filly ran a credible third in a minor sprint at Belmont first-up on June 3rd and has relished a continual step-up in distance through each subsequent start; winning a race over 1700m and running fifth in the Belmont Guineas before storming home to win the Listed Belmont Oaks (2000m) a fortnight ago.
