Tonight The Valley hosts a Group 1 night meeting headlined by the Moir Stakes 2017, betting tips and updated odds on the short distance feature found below.
A capacity 13 weight-for-age sprinters face off in tonight’s Group 1 $500,000 Moir Stakes (1000m) and currently three are under single-figures for the win.
The latest Moir Stakes odds online have Russian Revolution as the $3.40 favourite despite a wide barrier 11 draw for the gun Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Snitzel stallion.
The four-year-old kicked off his spring with a Moonee Valley win at this track and distance in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) and is tipped to repeat the feat in tougher company this evening.
He is flying and dominates on firmer tracks, plus is now proven at the course so even from the gate looks a danger aiming to be the sixth favourite in Moir Stakes betting to salute in the past decade.
No Moir Stakes winners has started at a double-digit price since Our Egyptian Raine ($13 in 2003) and that bodes well for the other single-figure fancies this year.
The returning Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign ($4.20) has her first run as a three-year-old and makes her Melbourne debut.
If she handles the anti-clockwise way and the older horses she is the obvious danger heading towards the $10 million The Everest (1200m) in Sydney on October 14.
Also being kept safe in the markets is the Magic Man Joao Moreira’s mount Sheidel ($7.50), the 1000m specialist second-up after a fourth behind Voodoo Lad in Caulfield’s Group 3 The Heath (1100m) on September 2 when only one and a half-lengths beaten.
Earlier we published our comprehensive 2017 Moir Stakes Form Guide & Betting Preview, our insider tips for the Moonee Valley feature based on the facts and stats uncovered there found below.
1st
#9 Sheidel ($7.50)
Think the single-figure fancies have the Moir Stakes results covered, but fancy a bit of value in this consistent mare. She is second-up having finished under two lengths off Voodoo Lad at Caulfield last time out and will relish coming back to her pet distance (12-6-2-1). She is a short distance specialist and chases her first Moonee Valley win. Her latest trip here for the Group 1 William Reid Stakes in the autumn produced a mid-field sixth, but she was only two and a quarter-lengths off the winner. Gets things her way from barrier six and the booking of Moreira is a big plus. Mares have a solid four-from-ten record in the race over the past decade and think she can surprise a few.
2nd
#13 She Will Reign ($4.20)
Plenty of unknowns around this Golden Slipper winning filly, but think she’s more than capable of stepping up to the challenge. This is her first run outside of Sydney, and how she handles the tight turns at The Valley will be key to her first-up run. Gets all the weight relief at WFA with only 50kg so should be flying and her two-year-old campaign was outstanding with four wins and a second from five starts. Was ultra-impressive in the Golden Slipper on a mud track, but handles all ground and has been trialling well. Extreme Choice scored for the three-year-olds in this race last spring and think She Will Reign can come close.
3rd
#5 Russian Revolution ($3.40)
Race favourite based on the lead-up win at the track and distance by over a length. Easily held Heatherly (2nd) and Houtzen (3rd) at bay that day from a good draw. Will be a little tougher from the double-digit barrier tonight, but favourites have a strong strike rate of late in the Moir Stakes. His only loss on a Good track was the Coolmore Stud Stakes fourth last Cup Carnival when two lengths off Flying Artie. Proven at The Valley, but is out to be just the first Moir Stakes winner to come off a Moonee Valley lead-up since Special (1986).
