The Melbourne racing action may be all about Winx on Saturday but over in Sydney the 2017 Spring Champion Stakes is the race to tune in for, our insider betting tips and updated odds on the three-years-old clash detailed below.
Running as Randwick Race 7 at 4:10pm (AEDT), the Group 1 $500,000 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) field features 10 young staying types with the bulk backing-up out of the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m).
The David Payne-trained Gloaming Stakes winner Ace High ($3.20) jumps favourite in Spring Champion Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au for the weekend having turned the lead-up into a staying contest and outlasting his rivals.
Tye Angland stays on for the step-up to 2000m on Saturday, with a trip to Flemington on November 4 in the Group 1 $1.5 million Victoria Derby (2500m) calling if Ace High wins again.
Outside the favourite a further four hopefuls sit under $10 in the Spring Champion Stakes betting markets including the Godolphin-raced Gloaming Stakes runner-up Sanctioned ($4.80) who is racing consistently but was simply outstayed in the lead-up.
So will Ace High salute for the punters or is there an upset Spring Champion Stakes result pending from the likes of Chris Waller’s Dulcify Quality gradate from last Saturday Tangled ($5.50) dropping in the weights or even the maiden Dissolution ($10) with the rails run from barrier one?
Earlier in the week we published a comprehensive 2017 Spring Champion Stakes Form Guide & Betting Preview, tips based on the facts and stats uncovered there listed below.
1st
#1 Ace High ($3.20)
The Gloaming Stakes is the form race into the Spring Champion Stakes and the double has been achieved plenty in the past decade. Money is coming for Ace High to continue that this spring and after the superior staying effort last time out, hard to see anything turning the tables on the deserving favourite who gets things his way from the barrier. Will be controlling things again here.
2nd
#7 Sully ($9)
This Kiwi-bred grey is well-bred and just needs to learn proper racing manners. Did quite a bit wrong in the Gloaming Stakes, after back-to-back wins earlier this preparation in easier company, but still ran fourth. Was over five lengths beaten, but gets blinkers on to help sharpen and straighten him up and that could prove a master stroke.
3rd
#3 Tangled ($5.50)
Waller’s Snitzel colt comes off the non-traditional lead-up having run under a length back fourth in the Dulcify last Saturday under a big weight (60.5kg). Was impressive in that Randwick mile race and backs-up getting out over 400m more here. Should handle the distance and will appreciate coming back to 56.5kg at set weights. Is the danger, but is being kept at a safe price.
