Trainer Ron Quinton enjoyed another Sydney Spring Racing Carnival feature quinella with his star mares Dixie Blossoms and Daysee Doom running one-two in the Angst Stakes 2017 on way to Melbourne for the Myer Classic.
Former jockey Quinton has plenty of love for both of his impressive mares who also ran the quinella, but in reverse order, last start in Rosehill’s Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m).
“Two wonderful mares for us. It’s a shame we have to keep running them against each other,” Quinton said.
“They’ve evened the score today. Very proud of both mares and they were both ridden beautifully.
“Two great rides, perfect.”
Today at Royal Randwick it was five-year-old Dixie Blossoms, who shares the sire Street Cry with now 14-time Group 1 winner Winx, who finished on top after turning the tables on her stablemate stepping up to a mile for the Group 3 $150,000 Angst Stakes (1600m).
She made history as the first mare to go back-to-back in the Angst Stakes continuing her impressive form at the track and distance, which now stands at two wins and a third from three runs.
Jockey Kerrin McEvoy, aboard Dixie Blossoms for the first time, got the eventual Angst Stakes winner into a lovely position in the run midfield with plenty of space.
“Ronnie said ‘take your time with her, let her get comfortable and she’ll finish off’ and he was spot on,” McEvoy said after the win.
Apprentice Andrew Adkins meanwhile continued his association with Domesday five-year-old Daysee Doom, the last start Golden Pendant winner with a couple of challenges today drawn the outside barrier and seeing the mile for the first time.
“Her first run at a mile was very, very good,” Quinton said of the Angst Stakes runner-up.
She was fourth then third on the outside upon settling, My True Love up front leading the Angst Stakes field of mares around.
On the home straight, Dixie Blossoms pulled to the outside, while Daysee Doom was nursed up into second joining the leader.
It was a huge run from Dixie Blossoms who joined her stablemate to fight it out in a thrilling finish, while the Les Bridge-trained Choisir four-year-old Zenalicious was also right in the mix looking to steal the spotlight from Quinton’s duo before setting for third.
In the end, the past experience over the distance and easier run in transit worked in the favour of Dixie Blossoms whose turn it was on Spring Champion Stakes Day third-up peaking at home off an outstanding ride from McEvoy.
“Pleasure to be on this one’s back, she’s a sweetheart,” McEvoy said.
“The Randwick mile was perfect for her.”
Quinton confirmed that both mares were now on track for a trip to Melbourne on November 4 for a Victoria Derby Day run at Flemington in the Group 1 $500,000 Myer Classic (1600m) back over the mile.
“Very likely they will, for sure, that’s a month away from today so we’ll work out a plan,” Quinton said.
