VRC Oaks-bound Bring Me Roses is the clear favourite in Wakeful Stakes 2017 betting this Saturday on Derby Day after the non-acceptance of Pinot.
The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Ethereal Stakes winner Pinot is set to bypass the Group 2 $300,000 G.H. Mumm Wakeful Stakes (2000m) on Day 1 of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and go straight into the Group 1 $1 million Kennedy Oaks (2500m) on November 9.
That sees the lightly-raced Tony McEvoy-trained High Chaparral filly Bring Me Roses shoot to the top of Wakeful Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.70 to further stake her Oaks claims.
Last start Bring Me Roses impressed at the Flemington track she returns to this weekend running away for a two and a quarter length victory in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m).
Looking a sure thing to run the 2000m of the Wakeful Stakes, she jumps from barrier 11 after winning from gate 10 last time out and has Mark Zahra coming aboard for the final Oaks tune-up.
Set to run as Flemington Race 2 at 12:20pm (AEDT) on Saturday, the Wakeful Stakes field features 16 three-year-old fillies and a further four are under double-figures for the win in the latest markets.
Second elect at $6 and drawn one outside the favourite is Luvaluva, the John Sargent-trained Mastercraftsman filly back up in class.
Two back she ran sixth to Alizee at Randwick in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) before a last start second over the same track / distance in a Benchmark 75 against the colts and geldings.
Money is on her to enjoy returning to a field of fellow fillies and the booking of in-form Blake Shinn has further boosted her standings with the bookies and punters.
Next best in better are Hiyaam ($7.50) and Teodora ($7.50) both coming off solid lead-up performances.
Mick Price prepares the consistent Hiyaam who was runner-up to Bring Me Roses two back in the Edward Manifold Stakes.
In her latest start she raced on Caulfield Cup Day and was third past the post behind Pinot in the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) over the Wakeful Stakes distance.
Michael Dee stays on Hiyaam this weekend and the duo are drawn well in barrier three.
Teodora has Dean Yendall back aboard after the hoop rode Darren Weir’s untapped Teofilo filly for back-to-back wins over 1300m and 1600m respectively kicking off her career earlier this spring.
Zahra rode Teodora last start when fourth in the Ethereal Stakes, a run she gets the chance to improve on at Flemington.
Other standout fillies in the Wakeful Stakes this spring include the Lindsay Park-trained Ethereal Stakes runner-up Rimraam ($8.50) who has run top two in all six of her starts to date, Cabierro ($13) with the outside alley to overcome and South Australian-raced Glam Guru ($14) backing up off a fourth in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m) last weekend.
