Perth Group 1 racing continues this Saturday at Ascot Racecourse with the 2017 Winterbottom Stakes, betting tips and the latest odds for the summer showdown detailed below.
Four of the dozen sprinters in the Group 1 $1 million Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) field this year are under double-figures for the win through Ladbrokes.com.au.
State Solicitor is flying for local trainers Grant & Alana Williams and is tipped to make it four wins on the trot from barrier four paying $3.10 in the Winterbottom Stakes odds.
His biggest rival is the Lloyd Kennewell-trained mare from Adelaide Viddora ($4.20).
She is yet to win over further than 1100m, but Kennewell is confident the in-form daughter of I Am Invincible is set to peak and will run out the 1200m without a worry after two eye-catching Group 1 efforts at The Valley in Melbourne.
Earlier in the week we published our comprehensive 2017 Winterbottom Stakes Form Guide & Betting Preview, our insider tips on the classic based on the facts and stats uncovered there.
1st
#10 Whispering Brook ($12)
Going an upset and tipping the early market mover Whispering Brook to become the first double-figure Winterbottom Stakes winner since 2010. She hasn’t won a race since the Group 3 WA Sires’ produce Stakes (1400m) in April of 2016 when in flying form, but she’s been competitive in plenty since including her third in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne as a three-year-old in the spring of 2016. She has had five runs back in W.A. this year and looks on the improve. The sixth in the Colonel Reeves saw her under a length beaten and she comes back from 57.5kg to 56.5kg at WFA. Jason Brown aboard is a big plus and barrier eight has produced more winners than any other gate in this race over the past 30 years. She’s get a strong Ascot strike rate (8:4-0-1) and can surprise at a price if she gets to the front.
2nd
#8 State Solicitor ($3.10)
Hard-to-beat favourite who could just come out and win after the impressive Group 3 victory when caught in traffic but still too good. Ran a length away when unplaced after a horror run in the race 12 months ago and is a bigger danger here looking to be the sixth favourite in eight years to win. Jockey William Pike stays on and is a dual winning hoop in this race, but when it held Group 2 status. Four of the past six winners won their lead-up so the Colonel Reeves Stakes success last time out bodes well for State Solicitor, out to do the double for the first time since 2012.
3rd
#1 Rock Magic ($6)
Plenty of boxes ticked by last year’s third placegetter. Plenty of Winterbottom winners have come off a Flemington run and the Darley Classic effort from this veteran at the end of a gutsy spring prep in Melbourne was good. He’s taken on the best sprinters and just needs to show up once more back home here.
