Lindsey Smith’s flying stayer Trap For Fools has firmed further in Perth Cup 2018 betting for New Year’s Day after extending his winning streak to six straight on Wednesday in W.A.

The ultra-consistent Poet’s Voice four-year-old took his Ascot track record up to seven wins from 11 starts saluting in the Listed $100,000 A.T.A. Stakes (2200m).

Backing-up from a win in the Listed G.A. Towtown Cup (2200m) at the same track and distance on December 9, Trap For Fools handled a rise in weight from 54kg to 57kg to keep his Perth Cup bid firmly on track.

Casuarina-based horseman Smith has mapped out an intense summer campaign into the Group 2 $500,000 Perth Cup (2400m) for Trap For Fools that will next see him back-up on Saturday in the Group 2 $400,000 Ted Van Heemst Stakes (2100m).

In Wednesday’s A.T.A. Stakes, the progressive galloper was ridden to victory by Alan Kennedy and on the line had a quarter-length to spare over the Joe Miller-trained Dark Alert ($13).

Outsider Not Again Ken ($21) rounded out the trifecta, with the Bob Peters-raced mare Royal Star the disappointment of the race finishing over three lengths back for fifth as the beaten $2 favourite.

Trap For Fools has been cut into $4 in the latest all-in Perth Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, with Material Man ($4.60) and Pounamu ($7) the next best in betting.

The top trio are all engaged for an early clash in Saturday’s Ted Van Heemst Stakes field, the race formerly known as the C.B. Cox Stakes serving as the traditional Perth Cup lead-up.

The latest Ted Van Heemst Stakes odds have Justin Warwick’s last start Kingston Town Classic runner-up over 1800m Material Man ($3.20) as the narrow favourite over Pounamu ($3.50) who won that Group 1 lead-up.

On the quick back-up, Trap For Fools is rated a $4 chance to further extend his winning streak ahead of Perth Cup Day on January 1.
