Hot favourite for Saturday’s Magic Millions 3YO Guineas 2018 at the Gold Coast, Pierata was the big winner at the barrier draw for the $2 million feature coming up trumps with the inside alley.
In the 2018 Magic Millions 2YO Classic barriers a host of the top fancies suffered wide alleys, but that wasn’t the case for the Restricted Listed $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m).
The Gregory Hickman-trained Pierro colt is into $2.40 in the latest Magic Millions Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au following his barrier one allocation for his summer grand final.
Dual Melbourne Cup winning jockey Corey Brown continues his association with the in-form youngster whose last start at Doomben on December 30 produced a two and a half-length win in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m).
Also drawn well with a better than midfield gate is the Bjorn Baker-trained Snitzel colt Goodfella in gate six with Jason Collett coming back aboard.
Goodfella has had two other hoops on his back for his two December runs at Doomben, but it is his spring jockey Collett in the saddle for the big one.
Last time out Damian Lane rode the Warwick Farm-trained three-year-old to a third behind Pierata in the Vo Rogue Plate, while Collett is back aboard for the first time since Goodfella’s unplaced 13th in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight back in November.
Goodfella is at a current quote of $9 in Magic Millions 3YO Guineas betting and along with Pierata is one of just three single-figure fancies for the set weights plus penalties clash.
The other under $10 for the win is the Kris Lees-trained All Too Hard filly Sasso Corbaro ($6) who is being kept safe in the markets despite her wide gate 14 draw.
Yet to finish worse than second in her five career starts, Sasso Corbaro chases a fourth win on the trot but rises notably in grade with her latest victory being at Randwick on December 30 by three lengths over 1300m as the odds-on favourite in a Benchmark 76.
Some of the other winners outside the favourite who drew well in the Magic Millions Guineas barriers this summer include Wild Heart (3) and Magnufighter (2).
Team Hawkes’ Hinchinbrook gelding Wild Heart was last seen racing on December 21 winning the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO Stakes (1200m).
Jockey Brenton Avdulla retains the ride for Saturday and also rode Wild Heart for a subsequent Rosehill 900m trial on January 8.
Magnufighter has Jamie Kah aboard on Saturday, the Gary Duncan-trained Magnus colt from the Sunshine Coast out to improve on a lead-up fifth in the Vo Rogue Plate.
Other key Magic Millions 3YO Guineas hopefuls and their barrier draws include the Chris Waller-trained So You Think Calculated (15) having his first run outside of Sydney, Jason Warren’s last start VOBIS Gold Carat winner from Victoria Bel Sonic (12) and Brisbane’s Written Tycoon gelding Shogun Sun (10).
