David Atkins’ undefeated Spirit Of Boom colt Jonker was the big winner in Tuesday morning’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2018 barrier draw coming up trumps with gate three for Saturday’s $2 million feature.
Gates for the capacity 16-starter, five-emergency field for this summer’s Restricted Listed $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) were revealed live from Surfers Paradise four days out from the super showdown.
The updated Magic Millions 2YO Classic odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au on Jonker have firmed into $4.40 after the gun youngster drew favourably with one of the inside barriers.
Jonker has won both of his career starts to date, most recently enjoying an over four length romp home at Wyong on December 21 in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m).
Remaining at the top of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting markets equal with Jonker at $4.40 is Tony McEvoy’s gun filly Sunlight despite her nasty barrier 15 draw.
The daughter of Zoustar took her record up to two wins from three career starts at the Gold Coast last Saturday easily accounting for her rivals by a four and a half-length winning margin as the odds-on favourite in a Two-Years-Old Handicap over 1100m.
Sunlight carted the 58kg top weight and will relish the drop back to 55kg at set weights on Magic Millions Day, fit and firing on the quick back-up with Luke Currie retaining the ride.
Ace trainer of juveniles McEvoy also saddles-up Crockett from gate 10, the progressive All American colt shaping-up as more of a 1400m horse after his midfield seventh in the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on December 30.
One of the widest-drawn early favourites for the Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic this year was the Tony Gollan-trained Ef Troop, another gun son of Spirit Of Boom who has work to do from gate 18.
With the emergencies out, one-time favourite Ef Troop will come into gate 13 and he is now on the second line of betting at $4.60.
Ef Troop has saluted in both his career starts at Doomben Racecourse, most recently on December 16 when beating home Crockett by over five lengths in the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1100m).
Unlike many of the other two-year-olds in the official Magic Millions Classic field, Ef Troop has been kept fresh for Saturday’s run without a subsequent start over the past month and presents fresh with Matthew McGillivray aboard again.
Brisbane horseman Gollan makes a double-pronged assault on the $2 million classic also represented by his lightly-raced filly Outback Barbie, another in-form Spirit Of Boom progeny.
Veteran hoop Jim Byrne continues his association with the up-and-comer on Saturday from a favourable gate six draw after guiding her to victory on debut in last month’s Listed Calaway Gal Stakes (1100m).
Other key Magic Millions 2YO Classic hopefuls and their barriers this season include Lindsay Park’s visiting Victorian-trained Snitzel filly Nomothaj (2), the very widely-drawn Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic third-placed colt Bondi (20) for Peter & Paul Snowden and Lee Curtis’s BJ McLachlan Stakes winning Epaulette filly Meryl (5).
