This afternoon’s Gosford Cup 2018 is fast approaching and our insider tips and updated odds on the summer staying showdown are detailed below.
Due to jump at 5:05pm (AEDT), this season’s Listed $150,000 Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) features 10 hopefuls and over half are under $10 for the win in the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Favourite in Gosford Cup betting paying $3.10 and still getting plenty of support from the punters is the Kris Lees-trained Singing, the French import after a third win on the trot.
Glyn Schofield comes aboard the evergreen eight-year-old whose latest two runs produced Doomben wins in December and third-up here over the distance looks to still have plenty to give.
Following in the Gosford Cup odds at $4.80 is then the Fred Cowell-trained local Casino Prince eight-year-old Mighty Lucky.
The gelding has had three previous runs at his home track without a top three finish, but will be out to amend for that after a string of close fourth place finishes this season.
His latest was at Randwick on Boxing Day when only a length off Montauk in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) and there is a definite chance he can finally get into the top three here with fitness on his side.
So will the top two battle it out for the win or is there value a little further down the Gosford Gold Cup markets this season in the likes of defending champion Red Excitement ($6) who carries a bit 60.5kg weight or the Summer Cup winning Montauk ($7) for Chris Waller?
1st
#8 Hogmanay ($6)
Going to tip the last start Sydney form of this Waller-trained Lonhro five-year-old who carried 59.5kg to victory over 1800m at Randwick on December 30. Up in distance chasing his first win over further than 1900m here and rises in grade, but drops right back to just 54kg and should be flying with that weight. Faces some genuinely tough old stayers, but think he’s in a purple patch of form and can get the job done as one of the best backed in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
2nd
#2 Red Excitement ($6)
Last year’s winner Red Excitement presents in great form again as an eight-year-old coming off the close Summer Cup second. He’s up notably in the kilos, but is two-from-three at the Gosford track and presents as an Each Way chance with Brenton Avdulla likely to get the old boy up on the speed to take advantage of the galloper’s pace from the wider gate.
3rd
#6 Singing ($3.10)
Firming favourite after leading all-the-way over 2200m at Doomben for a 3.25 length win last time out. This French raider is down in distance and gets in well weight-wise with 55.5kg. Wouldn’t need to do much more than last time out to salute for the punters here.
