At Hobart Racecourse on Friday night a smart field of summer three-year-old stayers do battle in the Tasmanian Derby 2018, betting tips and the latest odds on the set weights clash detailed below.
Set to run as Race 6 at 6:54pm (AEDT) at the twilight meet, this season’s Listed $150,000 Schweppes Tasmanian Derby (2200m) features seven runners and there is an odds-on favourite in the mix.
Civil Disobedience from the Victorian stables of Darren Weir has been steadily backed by the punters in from $2.10 to $1.85 in the Tasmanian Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au to salute from the inside alley.
The in-form Raise The Flag colt enjoyed back-to-back wins over 2000m earlier this season against older rivals before a last start Flemington third with 60kg on his back on January 20.
Back to set weights Civil Disobedience looks the deserving favourite and one to beat with fitness on his side and the continued association of hoop John Allen.
In an open field outside the favourite there are a further four three-year-olds at single-figures in Tasmanian Derby betting including the stablemate coming off a Hobart Guineas win at the track a fortnight back Wolfendale ($4.20) and the lightly-raced Kugelblitz ($4.60) stepping up in grade after a runaway Werribee win over 2030m in mid-January.
So will the best three in betting salute or is there value tipping a couple of longer hopes in the Tasmanian Derby results this summer racing season?
1st
#2 Wolfendale ($4.20)
Of the two gun Weir-trained visitors going for the value and tipping the Hobart Guineas winner to make it three wins on the trot. This son of Astronomer Royal backed-up from a Cranbourne victory in the mud to salute over 2100m at this track on a Good (4) course proving his staying potential and versatility. Don’t see him having any issues with the step-up to 2200m, small field and barrier three suits and Group 1 winning jockey Dean Yendall is in the saddle again. Genuine danger and value.
2nd
#1 Civil Disobedience ($1.85)
So many boxes ticked by the favourite who is impossible to leave out of the all-Weir quinella. Think odds-on is a little short, but he comes off a luckless Flemington run with three kilos more giving weight away to his rivals. Has winning form over open-age fields, still needs to prove himself over further than 2000m but the inside alley gives him every chance to do so and salute for the punters.
3rd
#4 Double You Tee ($7)
Best of the locals shapes-up as John Blacker’s Longford-trained Written Tycoon colt. Has just one win from seven starts, but has been racing consistently at this level with seconds in the Tasmanian Guineas and Hobart Guineas at the track. Was a half-length off Wolfendale last time out and looks like he’ll appreciate further. Needs a touch of luck from the outside alley, but can finish in the money late.
