2018 Millie Fox Stakes Winner Daysee Doom onto Coolmore Classic

A clash with stablemate Dixie Blossoms is again pending for Ron Quinton’s tough mare Daysee Doom in the Coolmore Classic next month after her brilliant return to winning form first-up in the Millie Fox Stakes 2018.

Randwick horseman Quinton was forced to run his two stable stars against each other plenty last season, including in the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill in September when Daysee Doom and Dixie Blossoms ran the quinella.

He was able to keep them apart first-up this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival however and on Hobartville Stakes Day the punters got a good look at Domesday five-year-old Daysee Doom before Dixie Blossoms returns a week later.

Enjoying a fourth win from eight runs at Rosehill Gardens and her first success since the Golden Pendant Stakes, the always-honest Daysee Doom had the benefit of two good Randwick trials ahead of her return in the Group 2 $200,000 Vinery Stud Millie Fox Stakes (1300m).

Jockey Andrew Adkins reunited with her and got her up on the pace, ridden for speed to settle second to the Gerald Ryan-trained front runner Girl Sunday.

Race favourite, the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Breeders Classic winner Prompt Response settled in third with cover as Chris Waller’s Group 1 champion Foxplay landed in fourth.

At the 600m Adkins began to inch closer on the outsider of the leader with Daysee Doom and onto the straight, Girl Sunday ($15) and her hoop Tim Clark still held the lead.

The punters were cheering for the heavily-backed Prompt Response ($2.60) who tried to get a run up on the rails, while Foxplay ($5) also began to let down and turned the race into a real thriller between a host of quality mares.

Daysee Doom ($7.50) however showed her usual tenacity and kept trying and trying until she got to the line a nose ahead of the gallant Girl Sunday.

“Jeez she let down and she’s just so tough and late over the line she was just all over them,” Adkins said post-win.

Foxwedge four-year-old Foxplay rounded out the close Millie Fox Stakes trifecta in third just ahead of the beaten but also brave favourite Prompt Response who was squeezed for room late.

Quinton confirmed plans to run Daysee Doom back at Rosehill on March 17 in the Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic (1500m) where she will be out to improve on her fourth to Heavens Above on the back of a Millie Fox Stakes third last autumn.

“She’s always shown that she’s tough, a bit mad, but she’s tough and Andrew really gets on well with her,” Quinton said post-win.

“She’s one tough nut, she never knows when she’s beaten.

“It’s so important for breeding [to win these Group 2s], they’ve already been offered big money for her, but she won’t be going anywhere any time soon.

“Yep for sure [the Coolmore Classic is the target].

“They’ll both end up in the Coolmore [Daysee Doom and Dixie Blossoms], you can’t keep them away [from each other] for too long.”
