Winx has drawn the outside barrier (10) in the 2018 running of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes field at Randwick on Saturday.
Nothing seems to faze the champion Chris Waller-trained mare and the outside gate did not cause her any trouble when winning the George Ryder three weeks ago.
She only had five others to beat that day but will have nine others to contend with on Saturday as she attempts to win her 18th Group 1 in the $4 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).
She will equal Black Caviar’s 25 wins in a row if she were to win her second Queen Elizabeth Stakes, off the back of a very similar preparation to last year. With the exception of her planned first up run in the Apollo Stakes, which was missed due to a suspended Hugh Bowman, her preparation has been identical to 2017’s campaign.
Last start Doncaster winner, Happy Clapper, is not only the clear second pick in terms of the market on Saturday, but is also clearly the public’s second favourite horse. The massive gelding has won hearts for being so consistent and reliable as well as for his relatable and likeable trainer in Pat Webster.
The last time the Darren Weir trained Humidor ran into Winx he ran her to less than half a length in the 2017 Ladbrokes Cox Plate.
Darren Weir will also saddle up Gailo Chop who returns to his favoured 2000 meters after missing the placings last start in the Tancred Stakes.
