Lucky Hussler Out of Doomben 10,000 Field: The Goodwood Next

Trainer Darren Weir has withdrawn veteran eight-year-old Lucky Hussler from Saturday’s 2018 Doomben 10,000 field due to injury with The Goodwood in Adelaide scheduled for the horse’s new first-up run.

Husson gelding Lucky Hussler was a roughie hope to salute fresh in the Group 1 $700,000 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) in Brisbane despite boasting three previous wins at the track.

A foot abscess has seen a setback to the $2.14 million earner’s late autumn racing return however with Lucky Hussler to be saved for Saturday week’s Group 1 $1 million The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville instead.

Dual Group 1 winner Lucky Hussler was last seen running sixth at the Gold Coast in mid-January’s $1 million Magic Millions Cup (1400m), a race he won back in 2016.

A noted first-up performer (12:4-0-1), the rising nine-year-old was engaged in the Doomben 10,000 field drawn the rails on Saturday for his first run at the track since 2014.

Weir has rescheduled his campaign kick-off for May 19 in The Goodwood 2018, which Lucky Hussler finished seventh to Flamberge in back in 2015.

He hasn’t raced in South Australia since, but Weir has enjoyed a nice recent record in The Goodwood taking out the feature Adelaide sprint with Platelet (2013) and Black Heart Bart (2016).

Pre-field The Goodwood odds at Ladbrokes.com.au list Lucky Hussler as a $21 chance, markets firmly led by the defending Lindsay Park-trained winner Vega Magic ($2.40) who hasn’t raced since a seventh to Redzel in last November’s Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m).

Weir meanwhile is now without representation on Doomben 10,000 Day having also withdrawn his promising young stayer Lucky For All from the last – the Group 3 $125,000 Rough Habit Plate (2000m).

Instead the Tavistock gelding, who has won his past two starts, chases a hat-trick racing at Caulfield in the $120,000 Le Pine Funerals Handicap (2000m).

The Kiwi expat debuted across the Tasman running fourth in early January and is now undefeated down under having won on a Heavy (10) at Terang in mid-April and a Soft (5) at Warrnambool last time out.

Caulfield is currently rated a Soft (6) for Saturday’s meeting and Lucky For All is the odds-on favourite at $1.85 through Ladbrokes.com.au to keep the wins coming.
