2018 Doomben Cup Betting: Oregon’s Day and Ambitious joint favourites

A.D. Hollindale Stakes winner Oregon’s Day and Anthony Freedman’s Japanese import Ambitious have been installed joint favourites at Ladbrokes.com.au after the final field was declared for the 2018 Group 1 $650,000 Hardy Brothers Doomben Cup (2000m) at Doomben on Saturday.

The Mick Price trained Oregon’s Day and newly declared Victorian Ambitious have been quoted at $4.50 each in the thirteen horse field just ahead of the Chris Waller trained Satono Rasen ($6) who also started his career in Japan.

Oregon’s Day stormed into Doomben Cup contention with a resounding win in the Group 2 $358,000 Attwood Marshall A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast on May 5 and the mare will jump from barrier two with Hollindale Stakes winning jockey Jim Byrne in the saddle again.

Ambitious has only had three runs in Australia for Victorian trainer Anthony Freedman with his best effort being a second, two starts back, to Almandin in the Group 1 $1.5m Kia Tancred Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill during the 2018 Sydney Autumn Carnival.

The six year old then finished eighth to Winx in the Group 1 $4m Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on day two of The Championships on April 14.

Craig Williams has been aboard Ambitious for his last two starts and gets the mount again and will be able to give him every chance from barrier seven.

Satono Rasen has drawn barrier four with Glyn Schofield taking over from Glen Colless who was aboard the Japanese import at his second race start in Australia when fourth in the A.D. Hollindale Stakes.

Satono Rasen is one of six runners for trainer Chris Waller and the leading trainer will also saddle up Comin’ Through and Tom Melbourne who are sharing the next line of betting at $9.50, Egg Tart at $10, Life Less Ordinary at $12 and one of the outsiders of the field, One Foot In Heaven at $41.

The Bruce Hill trained Man Of His Word has emerged as a chance for the locals after finishing third to Oregon’s Day in the A.D. Hollindale Stakes and is marked at $21 after drawing the inside barrier.
