Third acceptances have been taken for the upcoming Ladbrokes Cox Plate 2024 at Moonee Valley on October 26 with only 26 remaining weight-for-age contenders left in the mix for the iconic $5 million showdown this spring.
Down from 45 at second acceptance stage, the 26 third acceptors for this year’s Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) feature two internationals led by the all-in favourite Prognosis from Japan.
The Mitsumasa Nakauchida-trained Deep Impact seven-year-old is still lightly raced as a 15-time starter at time of publish who the Aussie bookies are taking no chances with.
Updated Cox Plate betting markets at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au have Prognosis, who boasts a great record over the distance (11:5-2-1), as the $4.20 top elect in a tight battle.
The other overseas raider still vying for their spot is the Harry Eustace-trained Docklands who is rated a $21 shot for the Europeans.
Of the locals, it is the talented Ciaron Maher-trained mare Pride Of Jenni considered the most likely sitting just behind Prognosis at $4.50 for the win.
The emphatic Queen Elizabeth winner from the autumn returned to winning form third-up this spring taking out the Group 2 John F. Feehan Stakes (1600m) at The Valley on September 27 defeating regular rival Mr Brightside.
It is an open all-in market for the ‘Race Where Legends Are Made’ with Broadsiding ($5) and Via Sistina ($6) hot on the heels of the favourites.
James Cummings‘ three-time Group 1 winning colt Broadsiding first takes on a field of his own age again second up as the odds-on favourite in this weekend’s Caulfield Guineas off his win fresh in the Golden Rose in Sydney.
Via Sistina meanwhile continues to impress for Waller and connections posting another elite level win down under at Flemington when denying her likely Caulfield Cup-bound Underwood winning stablemate Buckaroo victory in the Group 1 Turnbull.
Mr Brightside, runner-up last year, is also right up there for his third Cox Plate assignment as a $9 shot this season.
The 2024 Ladbrokes Cox Plate final acceptances close at 8:30am (AEDT) on Tuesday October 22.
