The 2019 Caulfield Cup field has been confirmed following the Coongy Cup results with the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained winner Wolfe gaining an eleventh-hour slot in the handicap classic.
Due to run as Caulfield Race 9 on Saturday in Melbourne, the Group 1 $5 million Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (2400m) features a capacity line-up of Spring Cup hopefuls including Wolfe who won the ballot exemption on offer to Wednesday’s Group 3 Ladbrokes Coongy Cup winner.
Just two horses in the Coongy Cup field were still in Caulfield Cup contention including the successful Novellist five-year-old, Japanese-bred Wolfe who defeated Top Of The Range (2nd) and Kiwia (3rd).
Looking likely to be run down by the eventual runner-up, Wolfe gave a lovely kick in the closing stages of what was a thrilling Coongy Cup race to secure his ticket into the Caulfield Cup field in 2019.
Wolfe was a $101 roughie in the all-in Caulfield Cup odds but has subsequently firmed into $26 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Japanese raider Mer De Glace is favourite to upset the locals, the Rulership entire looking to repeat the feat of the ill-fated Admire Rakti (2014) who won the 2400m classic for Japan five years ago.
Best Solution (2018) won the Caulfield Cup last year for Godolphin trainer Saeed Bin Suroor, but this year the UK horseman is without a runner.
Trainer Chris Waller is yet to prepare a Caulfield Cup winner despite saddling-up 17 chances in the past nine years.
This year he is in with a strong chance led by Finche, one of the best in Caulfield Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au after a brilliant start to the spring from last year’s Melbourne Cup fourth placegetter.
