Reisling Stakes Winner Dame Giselle Moves Up Golden Slipper Betting

Team Snowden’s Reisling Stakes winner Dame Giselle has firmed in 2020 Golden Slipper betting to become the second filly in three years to do the double.

In 2018 Estijaab backed up from her Reisling Slipper Trial success to take out the $3.5 million Group 1 classic at Rosehill Gardens and money is coming for the progressive I Am Invincible filly Dame Giselle to repeat the feat this autumn.

Winner of the $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) on November 9, Dame Giselle returned when running third in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1000m) at Randwick on February 15.

She was quick to improve and atone second-up narrowly fighting off regular rival See You Soon to win the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) and earn her spot in the Golden Slipper field.

It was the third time Dame Giselle and the Jean Dubois-trained Siyouni filly See You Soon had filled the quinella with the former taking the record up to two-to-one with the devastatingly close Reisling Stakes result.

Kerrin McEvoy replaced Tommy Berry aboard the $3.10 favourite in the Reisling, the hoop going forward early to sit three wide in third just off the pace set by the Lonhro Plate winner Supreme Idea who used the draw to go to the front.

“She had to sit without cover but lucky they steadied up. She travelled well around the corner and then when we asked her she fought hard. The winner dived at me late but we were good enough to hold on. We knew she’d come on from the first up run,” McEvoy said.

See You Soon meanwhile went back early from the outside barrier in a tightly bunched field with only two and a half-length covering first to last around the turn.

Supreme Idea led onto the straight from Mildred and Dame Giselle, while See You Soon got all the room to move up along the rails closing off well.

At the furlong, Dame Giselle went up to take the lead giving a nice kick to fight back after See You Soon threatened on her inside.

Dame Giselle won by the bob of the head, while the Grahame Begg-trained Group 3 winning Hinchinbrook filly Mildred rounded out the Reisling Stakes trifecta in her Sydney debut on the back of a third to Ole Kirk in Flemington’s Listed Talindert Stakes.

“It wasn’t how we planned it. It’s a good horse that keeps rising to the occasion,” co-trainer Peter Snowden said post-win.

“It was be outside lead or take a trail. It was going to pan out right in the first 200m but they pulled up in our faces and planted Kerrin three deep with no other option but to sit there and cuddle her up. She did plenty of work but was still good enough to put her head out and win.”

The Golden Slipper runs on March 21 and the latest odds at Ladbrokes.com.au list Dame Giselle at $10 to hand co-trainer Peter Snowden his third win following his previous success with Sepoy (2011) and Capitalist (2016).

“If there was a template to get to the Golden Slipper that is it. To win that race it gives you so much more time to be as easy as you can to get them there. Bit of luck she will be peaking in a fortnight,” he said.
