2020 Rosehill Guineas Betting Update: Shadow Hero Firming Favourite

The money continues to roll in for Randwick Guineas winner Shadow Hero to do the double as the talented youngster sits top of the Rosehill Guineas 2020 betting markets for Sydney on Saturday.

Punters only have to go back one year to find the last horse to complete the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) – Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) double with The Autumn Sun (2019) winning both events as the favourite last autumn.

This season’s $600,000 Rosehill Guineas field features 13 class three-year-old stayers led in betting by the Mark Newnham-trained Shadow Hero who the bookies are tipping to emulate The Autumn Sun.

Drawn barrier eight with regular rider Joshua Parr retaining the star mount, the Pierro gelding has firmed in from $3.70 to $3.10 in the latest Rosehill Guineas odds for Golden Slipper Day at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Second-up he looked the good winning the Randwick Guineas over a mile ahead of his shot at another Group 1 success over 2000m following on from last September’s Spring Champion Stakes victory.

Also proven at the Rosehill track, Shadow Hero ticks plenty of boxes and looks a hard to beat favourite this weekend.

“He has really come on,” Newnham told Racenet this week.

“Josh (Parr) rode him Monday morning on the course proper and he was glowing about the horse.

“I rode him this morning and he felt better than he did heading into the Randwick Guineas.

“He came through the Randwick Guineas win better than he’s come through any race.

“Apart from the fact he’s physically stronger he is more mentally mature and aware.”

Three other runners are currently under $10 in the Rosehill Guineas betting markets including the Richard Litt-trained Castelvecchio ($6) looking to return to winning form.

Craig Williams comes back aboard the well-performed Dundeel colt for the first time since guiding him to second behind star Japanese mare Lys Gracieux in last October’s Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

Prior to that the bay was runner-up to Shadow Hero when a length beaten in the Spring Champion Stakes, while his last victory was nearly a year ago in Randwick’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) when defeating star filly Loving Gaby.

This prep Castelvecchio has had two Sydney runs for a sixth in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) and eighth in the Randwick Guineas when things didn’t go his way, a run he can improve on here getting up over more distance.

Following closely are then the rails-drawn VRC Derby champ from last Cup Carnival Warning ($6.50) and the fellow Anthony Freedman-trained Chenier ($7) to be ridden by last year’s winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy.

While Warning comes off a fifth in the Randwick Guineas and is set to relish the rise in distance his stablemate, lightly-raced Medaglia D’Oro colt Chenier, comes via a different lead-up.

He was last seen crossing fourth behind Alligator Blood in Flemington’s Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne in late February and Saturday has him racing in Sydney for the first time on the back of a promising Randwick trial win.
