2020 Queen Of The South Stakes Winner Shrouded In Mist In An Upset

A tactical change with a run up on the speed proved a treat for the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Shrouded In Mist at Morphettville on Saturday with the classy grey scoring an upset all-the-way win in the Queen Of The South Stakes 2020.

Owner Peter Katelanis put the pressure on co-trainer Tony McEvoy to target the Group 2 $175,000 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) on Robert Sangster Stakes Day despite McEvoy being unconvinced the Exceed And Excel five-year-old had the right form to win.

McEvoy was happy to be proven wrong however with Shrouded In Mist saluting at $21 in a dominant victory over the better fancied Seabrook ($4.40) in the mile feature.

“Really has me a bit surprised, I didn’t think this mare was in the right form,” McEvoy told the media post-win.

“Peter was very keen to run in this race…I was a bit keen to run her in the lesser race today.

“We were keen to put her forward in the race and we went to the stewards…she got quite an easy lead.

“It was a good effort.”

Despite previous good form at the Morphettville mile, Shrouded In Mist was forgotten by the punters for her rise in grade on the back of two disappointing second-last efforts at the track this campaign.

She was on song today however, jockey Barend Vorster from the wide alley moving up three-deep to charge across and take up the lead as the stable had informed stewards they would.

Seabrook flew out the gates clearly landing in front before handing up the lead to sit third, while Snogging settled into second.

Shrouded In Mist set only a moderate pace, while the Danny O’Brien-trained race favourite November Dreaming was ridden quietly on the rails off the speed.

Approaching the home corner Snogging was creeping closer, while the well-backed November Dreaming failed to get through on the rails not really handling the turn in a disappointment for favourite backers.

Shrouded In Mist meanwhile gave a good kick running a huge race for an all-the-way victory ahead of Seabrook who had the inside run around the home turn but who just couldn’t catch the winner.

In third just nudging Snogging out of the minors was the Robbie Griffiths-trained Fidelia ($10).

“She’s a pretty good mare,” McEvoy added.

“We’ve always kept targeting these races because Peter’s a breeder.

“For her to win this Group 2 race, that noise you can hear is the champagne corks popping in his house.

“So nice to get that one up when we weren’t quite expecting it.”
