Trainer Chris Waller enjoyed his second Gosford Gold Cup win with his once very promising mare Another Dollar returning to her better form to win the provincial feature moved in 2020 to Royal Randwick.
The Gosford Racing Club didn’t stop the COVID-19 crisis from cancelling this season’s edition of the Listed $200,000 Gosford Gold Cup (2000m) with the distance feature taking place at Randwick on Saturday.
Waller, who won the event back in 2013 with Moriarty, saddled-up six in the field including the 59.5kg topweight Yulong Prince who led the Gosford Cup betting markets at jump.
It was stablemate Another Dollar sneaking in on the 54kg lightweight with Glen Boss in the saddle who stole the show however, the Kiwi-bred daughter of Ocean Park saluting at $14.
As a three-year-old Another Dollar had shown plenty of promise with seconds in both the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) and Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) behind the also Waller-trained Youngstar back in the winter of 2018.
Having seemingly lost her way for a few preparations, Waller was thrilled to have her striking form in the Gosford Gold Cup on the back of a very nice third at big odds behind Amangiri at Rosehill on ANZAC Day in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup (1500m).
“She’s been around the money in some really good races throughout her career,” he said post-win.
“She looked to have lost her way a little bit…good to see Bossy getting her home today.”
Boss was patient aboard Another Dollar second-up, giving the mare plenty of cover early allowing her to settle midfield off the pace as Matthew Smith’s last start Doomben winner Ilwendo led the field around.
Mark Newhnam’s popular grey Stratum mare Greysful Glamour meanwhile had to settle into second sitting off the front-runner, not getting things all her way up front in the Cup and eventually weakening right out of the race.
Ilwendo made it a true staying contest, leading into the straight before Boss moved up on Another Dollar who was running on well to give chase.
Presenting as the danger down the outside, Another Dollar moved up to Ilwendo and went on to hit the line a long head in front to beat home the brave runner-up.
“You could tell she wanted to win,” Boss said.
“It felt like I was never going to get beaten from about the 600.”
Best Of Days was given every chance racing third throughout and held that position to finish off the trifecta in another solid performance from the Godolphin galloper.
Waller said while this was about the mare’s level now, Another Dollar was going up for sale soon and so he was hesitant to map out any future racing plans.
“I think she’s in the mares’ sale coming up soon…the price tag might be a little bit better for the owners now,” he said.
“It was a good race to watch.
“Thanks for the Gosford Club for putting the race on and allowing it to happen.”
