Odds on favourite Wisdom Of Water did it all too easily at Aquis Park on the Gold Coast on Saturday leading from barrier to box to win the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic by three lengths.
The two-year-old raced away from the inside draw under Robbie Fradd and looked more than comfortable dictating from the front. Fradd had the colt under hands and heels as the pair began to pull away, leaving co-trainer Toby Edmonds feeling confident in his horse’s progression ahead of a potential Group 1 start in the J.J. Atkins at Eagle Farm on June 6.
“There’s a lack of tempo there so we’re confident to bang him up on the speed and not get in behind horses that are going to pull up in his face,” Edmonds told Sky Racing following Saturday’s win.
“We wanted to be positive. If something went around him and lead, fine, but what happened today is good. He’s had two good solid gallops now and he goes into the JJ Atkins cherry ripe.”
Wisdom Of Water has now won two from his four starts and, not surprisingly, has firmed from $7.00 into equal favouritism with Isotope in the all-in 2020 JJ Atkins betting markets online at Ladbrokes.com.au.
The colt does, however, have a slight query stepping up to the 1400m for the first time. The track at Eagle Farm has also posed some problems for the stable in the past.
“We’ve got a bit of work to do between here and there, we’ve got three weeks to get him a bit fitter” Edmonds went on to say.
“We’ll take him up there for a gallop, he used to perform poorly up there on that track in his first run there, so we’ve got a bit of work to do, but quite confident he’s as good a chance as any.”
Tick Tock Boom and Superare finished in a dead heat for second on Saturday, while all of Chris Waller’s horses struggled to make up ground.
