Chris Waller’s in-form galloper Kinane is nearing odds-on territory in Gunsynd Classic 2020 betting in Brisbane this weekend at a current $2 quote to win the Eagle Farm showdown for a third straight victory.
The consistent Reliable Man gelding is one of a capacity field of three-year-olds set to contest Saturday’s Group 3 $115,000 Lexus Gunsynd Classic (1800m), which runs as one of three Group status races on a reshuffled Victory Stakes Day program.
Traditionally a lead-up to the Group 1 Queensland Derby, the COVID-19 crisis sees a reduced Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival taking place without a Derby this season.
Still, the quality of the Gunsynd Classic field remains high with plenty of money coming for the Kiwi-bred favourite to win his Queensland debut.
Two back Kinane broke his maiden status with a mile win at Wyong before stepping-up in grade at Randwick on April 18 for a strong win in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m).
The class horse in Saturday’s race, the Sydney visitor is back down in distance and despite drawing the far outside barrier (17 into 14) remains the clear favourite to extend his winning streak.
Three other runners are also under $10 in the latest Gunsynd Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au including the $5.50 second elect Profit drawn barrier two with James Orman in the saddle.
The local Chris Anderson-trained Dundeel gelding has already won over the 1800m and has a strong Eagle Farm record (6:2-3-1) that he is looking to add to on the weekend.
Profit presents rock-hard fit fifth up on the weekend and should appreciate getting out over the distance on the back of a fourth in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1615m) at Doomben last start.
Eagle Farm horseman Anderson has also accepted for his consistent Smart Missile gelding Ballistic Boy drawn out wider with regular rider Brad Stewart continuing his association on the $8.50 shot in betting.
A winner over the Sunshine Coast mile two back on ANZAC Day, Ballistic Boy is also a Daybreak Lover Stakes graduate having run a close third ahead of his first shot at a win over further than 1600m.
The other single-figure fancy at $8 is Sky Horse for Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, co-trainer Maher having won the Gunsynd Classic two years ago with Villermont (2018).
Jumping from the second widest barrier on the weekend, well-bred Tavistock filly Sky Horse is out to beat home the boys on the back of two wins over a mile at Pakenham and Sandown-Hillside respectively.
Her latest victory on April 20 was on a Heavy (10) track, with the Pakenham win prior to that on a Good (4), so she is versatile and drops back from 59kg to 55kg here so should be flying for hoop Matthew McGillivray.
