A field of promising young juveniles take to Adelaide’s Morphettville Parks track in SA on Saturday for the Oaklands Plate 2020 including the narrow top elect Instant Celebrity.
As is typical for the two-year-old races, there is a tight betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au on this season’s Listed $100,000 Schweppes Oaklands Plate (1400m).
The set weights plus penalties event features a field of 11 untapped middle-distance two-year-olds led in betting by the Phillip Stokes-trained Instant Celebrity.
Despite a wide barrier 10 (into 9 following the scratching of One More Thrill) draw, the Not A Single Doubt filly sits top of the Oaklands Plate odds at $3.90 and firming through Ladbrokes.com.au.
She comes off a winning debut at Morphettville over 1050m a month ago when saluting by nearly two lengths and has been kept fresh since.
Looking well suited with the rise in distance, Instant Celebrity is likely to settle just off the speed from the gate with Ms Kayla Crowther in the saddle again and has the class to run those in front down late.
A further five youngsters are also under $10 for the win in the latest Oaklands Plate betting markets including the $5.50 second elect Super Striker for Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas.
Co-trainer MacDonald won back-to-back editions of the race in 2002-03 with Hydrometer and Mot D’Or respectively and is out to win another 17 years on from his last.
Rebel Raider gelding Super Striker has his fifth start in the race chasing a second career win after breaking his maiden status in the Magic Millions Two-Years-Old Plate (1200m) at Murray Bridge last start.
He faces a tougher class of rivals here but with Todd Pannell coming aboard in barrier six looks a genuine chance at a Black-Type success.
The stable is also represented in the Oaklands Plate field by their runner-up in the same lead-up, Another Award, to be ridden from gate eight by Jason Holder.
The nicely-bred Shamus Award filly won over 1000m at Murray Bridge two back before her Magic Millions second when stepping up in distance.
Holder has his third straight start aboard Another Award who is at $7.50 to improve and return to winning form despite queries about her ability over the 1400m.
Trainer Tony McEvoy has won the Oaklands Plate three times since 2004 including the past two editions with Unfair Dismissal (2018) and Westport (2019).
He returns in 2020 saddling-up nearly half the field with five runners in partnership with his son Calvin with the team’s best hope at $6.50 being the rails-drawn Kahaylaan ($6.50).
A striking Pride Of Dubai colt, Kahaylaan has had three starts to date including a Melbourne run at Caulfield when fifth on debut back in late May.
He broke his maiden status second-up with a runaway 3.4 length success in a sprint race at Gawler a month later before his third at Balaklava last time out and is up to this grade with a similar run here.
The Brumby ($8) is also at single-figures for the stable on Saturday, Ryan Hurdle aboard the last start winning Spirit Of Boom gelding who won by four lengths over 1200m at Murray Bridge at just his second start on June 24.
Team McEvoy are also represented with a number of live-wire double-figure chances with value odds on offer for Dissident gelding The Krone ($14), the in-form filly Mayameen ($14) on the drift chasing a third win on the trot and roughie hope Who Runs The World ($26).
The other best in betting rounding out the hopes under double-figures at $7.50 is Matt Laurie’s Foxwedge gelding Foxgossip ($7.50) donning the number one saddlecloth from barrier two on the back of a win over the distance at Sale by three lengths on July 9.
