Patrick Payne’s ultra-consistent mare Rubisaki returns the clear favourite in Saturday’s Cockram Stakes 2020 betting markets at Caulfield having gone out a six-time winner on the trot last campaign.
Debuting as a four-year-old in the Group 3 $160,000 Moet & Chandon Cockram Stakes (1200m) this weekend, the daughter of Rubik is tipped as the one to beat following her outstanding summer – autumn preparation as a young filly.
First-up last time in she handled a rise in class winning the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington before travelling to Sydney in April to complete the Group 3 PJ Bell (1200m) – Group 3 James Carr (1400) stakes double at Randwick.
For her spring kick-off on Memsie Stakes Day, Rubisaki has her Kewney Stakes hoop Billy Egan returning to the saddle as she looks to extend her imposing winning streak to seven.
The card closer on an extended 10-race program, the Cockram Stakes field attracted 15 mares and Rubisaki drew wide out in gate 13.
Despite the barrier, she is being kept safe in Cockram Stakes betting at a short quote of $2.70 through Ladbrokes.com.au to add to her imposing record over the distance (5:4-1-0).
There may be a big field of spring hopefuls gathered for the Cockram this year, but just one other mare is under double-figures for the win thanks to the dominance of the favourite.
Second elect at current Cockram Stakes odds of $7 is in-form Street Boss mare Bless Her from the Cranbourne stables of Shea Eden.
The classy chestnut is also out to extend a strong run of wins having saluted five times on the trot in easier company.
She is unbeaten at Caulfield having gone out a winner at the track in July before returning on August 15 to win a mares’ handicap over 1100m.
Bless Her comes back a kilo to 55kg on Saturday going up in grade and has Jye McNeil retaining the ride as the duo look to repeat their two-length success from a fortnight back.
Of the double-figure fancies looking to score an upset Cockram Stakes win this season the standouts include the Grant & Alana Williams-trained Perfect Jewel ($10) from WA, the widely-drawn Madam Rouge ($11) to be ridden by Craig Williams from barrier 15 and the returning Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Pretty Brazen ($11).
Perfect Jewel was in excellent from at home in Perth over the winter, the now six-year-old daughter of Redoute’s Choice enjoying back-to-back Group 3 wins at Belmont before her second to Material Man in the Group 3 Strickland Stakes (2000m) last start.
She has a strong three-from-four record over the distance ahead of her Caulfield debut here where she also has her maiden run for her new trainers having been transferred from Adam Durrant for her spring raid in Melbourne.
The Chris Waller-trained Madam Rouge returns on the weekend chasing her first win since the $1 million Magic Million Sprint (1200m) at the Gold Coast back in January.
She too has her first Caulfield start in the Cockram Stakes, the Zoustar five-year-old last seen running a close second at blowout odds behind Tyzone in Eagle Farm’s Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in June.
Pretty Brazen could prove the value in the race despite going up in weight here, the Brazen Beau four-year-old having won the Group 3 Sandown Guineas (1600m) last November before back-to-back Group placings at Flemington in the autumn.
Her latest run saw her finish second to Saturday’s favourite Rubisaki in the Kewney Stakes, but she will need to be improving fresh here at set weights plus penalties.
