The resuming Chris Waller-trained Hungry Heart is tipped to beat home the fillies with the fitness edge sitting top of the Furious Stakes 2020 betting markets for this weekend at Royal Randwick.
The Group 2 $200,000 Darley Furious Stakes (1200m) field is down to 11 three-year-old fillies with the Jamie Richards-trained La Vernazza withdrawn on Thursday having been found to be lame in her near hind leg.
Of the remaining hopes it is Waller’s untapped daughter of Frankel in her three-year-old debut, Hungry Heart, who leads the markets at $2.80 and firming through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Drawn well in barrier three with James McDonald to ride, the classy chestnut was a first-up winner at the track and distance back in February taking out the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m).
She was last seen running a brave fifth in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill and presents a danger fresh this Saturday on the back of two solid Rosehill trials in August.
Waller chases his third Furious Stakes success following his previous victories with subsequent four-time Cox Plate heroine Winx (2014) and Foxplay (2016).
The Furious Stakes is the second leg of Sydney’s Princess Series of races following the opening chapter – the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes – won by Dame Giselle.
The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Silver Shadow winner is back on Saturday looking to make it two-from-two and occupies the second line of Furious Stakes betting at $4.40.
After opening as long as $6, Dame Giselle is the early market mover with the daughter of I Am Invincible looking to be the second filly in as many years to complete the Silver Shadow – Furious Stakes double following Libertini (2019).
She is also ridden by last year’s winning hoop Tommy Berry who was aboard for her first-up success, but is drawn wide in gate 10.
The other two fillies in the Silver Shadow Stakes trifecta – Thermosphere (2nd) and Miss Canada (3rd) – also return for a rematch with Dame Giselle this weekend.
The James Cummings-trained Exosphere filly Thermosphere is currently paying $7.50 as the third elect in Furious Stakes betting after her eye-catching run for second last start.
She is after her first win since the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) and has the outside alley to overcome on Saturday.
The Kris Lees-trained Miss Canada meanwhile remains a $31 roughie and easing despite her big run for third in the Silver Shadow as the Exceed And Excel filly is yet to win over further than 900m.
The last of the single-figure fancies is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Vangelic ($9.50) in gate four with Tim Clark to ride the Vancouver filly whose last start produced a second to Away Game in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes during ‘The Championships’.
