Heading the racing action at Ascot on Saturday, this season’s Group 1 $1 million Kingston Town Classic (1800m) is shaping up as a battle between the two best out of the Railway over the mile a fortnight back.

The Grant & Alana Williams-trained Reliable Man mare Inspirational Girl posted her third straight win in that Group 1 feature on November 21 carrying 53kg to a nearly two length win with the ‘Wizard of the West’ William Pike aboard.

Pike continues associations on the flying five-year-old with the mare out to do the Railway Stakes – Kingston Town Classic double for the first time since Sniper’s Bullet (2009).

She dominates the latest Kingston Town Classic odds on the final field at $2.20 through Ladbrokes.com.au, but will need to dig deep going up in the kilos at weight-for-age to 57kg on the weekend.

Pike meanwhile is after his third win in the event since 2014 having previously ridden Perfect Reflection (2015) and the brilliant Arcadia Queen (2018) to victory in the Kingston Town Classic.

The danger occupying the second line of Kingston Town Classic betting at $8 is the Railway Stakes runner-up Too Close The Sun prepared by Lindsey Smith.

The Carlton House gelding backed-up off a four-length win in the Listed Ascot Gold Cup (1800m) on the quick turnaround to go down in the Railway Stakes quinella.

He too goes up notable in weight from 53kg to 59kg, but should relish the step back-up in distance with Joseph Azzopardi retaining the ride.

Sharon Miller’s Universal Ruler gelding Uni Time was the shock third placegetter in the Railway Stakes trifecta at blowout odds and is also accepted for Saturday’s rematch paying $15 to score the upset.

Shorter in the markets at an equal $11 punters can find three-year-old Dom To Shoot as well as the defending Kingston Town Classic winner Kay Cee.

Shooting To Win gelding Dom To Shoot gets in on just 52kg at WFA, the Sean & Jake Casey-trained youngster looking for his first win over further than 1200m.

His last start was the close third under a length off the winner Watch Me Dance in the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) on November 21 with 56.5kg and the drop in weight puts him in the picture for a big run against the older horses in tougher company here.

Kay Cee meanwhile looks to go back-to-back in the Kingston Town Classic for the first time since her sire Playing God (2010-11).

The now four-year-old mare was brilliant last summer backing-up off her WA Guineas second to win the Group 1, but had a hiccup in the lead-up for her title defence when seven lengths back running 11th in the Railway Stakes last start.

The Kingston Town Classic 2020 barrier draw is set for release on Tuesday evening.
