The official 2022 Golden Slipper Stakes barrier draw is now out with the undefeated filly Coolangatta favourite out wide in gate 14.
A capacity field of nine fillies and seven colts do battle in Saturday’s Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens, and the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Coolangatta remains favourite despite a far from ideal barrier.
The unbeaten daughter of Written Tycoon is out to make history as the first Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner to go on and win the Golden Slipper without another run in between.
To be ridden by James McDonald again in the big one in Sydney, she sits top of the Golden Slipper odds at Ladbrokes.com.au on the final field at $5.
Since 2002 barrier 14 has produced three Golden Slipper winners: Polar Success (2003), Estijaab (14) and Kiamichi (2019).
Coolangatta however could come into as good as gate 11 should all four emergencies fail to gain a start: Sweet Ride (9), Millane (1), Semillion (18) and Man In The Mirror (4).
Barrier 11 produced recent champions She Will Reign (2017) and Mossfun (2014), and pre-scratchings the gate belongs this year to Blue Diamond Stakes third place-getter Jacquinot.
Anthony & Sam Freedman‘s last start Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Daumier is in barrier eight looking to do the rare double.
Since Courtza (1989) the only two-year-old to win the Blue Diamond – Golden Slipper double was Sepoy (2011).
Sepoy won his Slipper from barrier eight, which Daumier is currently drawn, but this year’s Blue Diamond champ could come into as good as six pending scratchings.
Mark Zahra rides Daumier on Saturday and the stable are confident they’re Epaulette colt is in the right form to win.
“He has done well since the Blue Diamond and his work this morning on a soft track was very good. Bring on Saturday,” @FreedmanRacing said on Twitter today.
Updated Golden Slipper betting has Daumier at a generous $18.
Following Coolangatta in the markets meanwhile are fellow last start winners Sejardan ($6) and She’s Extreme ($7).
Golden Gift winner Sebring colt Sejardan is drawn one on the inside of Daumier in barrier seven with in-form hoop Jason Collett continuing associations on the last start Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) winner.
Miss Finland (2006) was the last Slipper winner from gate seven.
She’s Extreme shot into Golden Slipper contention for trainer Anthony Cummings with her impressive Group 3 Magic Night Stakes victory at the track and distance on a Heavy (9) last Saturday.
On the quick back-up, she will look to be just the third filly since Bounding Away in 1986 to complete the double and jumps from gate six with Brett Prebble aboard.
Stratum (2005) was the last Golden Slipper champion to jump from barrier five.
Along with Sejardan, trainer Gary Portelli chases his second Slipper trophy this season with in-form Rebel Dane filly Fireburn in barrier two.
She is out to extend her winning streak to four on the trot and was last seen defeating subsequent Magic Night Stakes winner She’s Extreme in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Randwick back on February 26.
Richard & Michael Freedman won last year’s event with Stay Inside (2021) and have an eleventh-hour shot at back-to-back victories with Queen Of The Ball drawn barrier three.
The progressive I Am Invincible filly earned a late shot at the Slipper via a win in last Sunday’s Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) in Canberra and pays $17 to join Catbird (1999) as the only winners of the double in history.
Peter & Paul Snowden’s two well-supported Russian Revolution fillies Russian Conquest and Revolutionary Miss meanwhile both drew wide alongside each other in gates 16 and 17 respectively.
Historically the most successful Golden Slipper barrier in the race’s 65-year history is barrier one with nine winners.
With Peter Moody’s second emergency Millane drawing the inside alley on Tuesday morning, it is Fireburn (2) likely to start from the gate come Saturday.
Near the inside however might not be ideal this season with another predicted wet track for Golden Slipper Day 2022 as thunderstorms are forecast for late in the week.
