The rescheduled Group 1 $2 million Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes (2040m) has been moved after Friday night’s abandoned Moonee Valley meeting and will now take place as Race 11 on Cox Plate Day.
Dangerous lightning strikes forced Racing Victoria to call it quits on Friday night before the Manikato Stakes 2022 could take place.
The popular sprint has now been added to a bumper Cox Plate Day card set to run at 6:25pm (AEDT) today, Saturday October 22.
There were attempts to get the Manikato run and won including the abandonment of Race 6 at the twilight meeting, but with lightning continuing and the rain falling, the event could not take place safely.
“We monitored the situation ourselves but we’re also in constant contact with the Weather Bureau,” the head steward at Friday night’s meeting Rob Montgomery said.
“They advised there was a slow storm coming down from Seymour and we thought we had enough of a gap to fit in between the storm.
“Obviously, we didn’t. We thought we were doing the right thing, but you can’t judge the weather.
“It’s not fair on the riders, it’s not fair on the horses, so the safest bet was to abandon the meeting.
“It’s unfortunate for the Club.”
The widely-drawn Cliff Brown-trained The Inferno (17) and the Robert & Luke Price-trained Jamaea (9) have been scratched from the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes field.
Moonee Valley is currently rated a Soft (6), but with plenty of rain on the radar today there could be further downgrades to the track.
Updated Manikato Stakes odds at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au remain led by last start Group 2 Schillaci Stakes winner Paulele ($3.70).
Group 1 Moir Stakes winning filly Coolangatta on the rails is at $5.50, while her stablemate Bella Nipotina coming off a close second in that key lead-up at The Valley is the $4.20 second elect.
