The 2023 Winx Guineas takes place as part of the Sunshine Coast’s bumper Caloundra Cup Day card on Saturday, and below we take a look at the latest favourites and betting updates for the popular winter showdown.
The Group 3 $300,000 Winx Guineas (1600m) runs over the Caloundra mile at 4:02pm (AEST) as Race 7 of 9 on the card.
Current favourite in the updated Winx Guineas betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Lee Freedman-trained Soothsayer at $2.40.
Tim Clark is booked for the ride from a favourable barrier three draw.
The Divine Prophet gelding presents fit fourth-up and ready to fire with plenty of early money coming for the current market mover.
Soothsayer has a strong record over the distance (4:2-1-1) and was last seen running a close third under a quarter-length off Rediener in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at Eagle Farm back on June 10th.
The danger occupying the second line of betting at $4 is one-time favourite Grebeni drawn out wider (18) for trainers Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou.
The in-form Ocean Park gelding may have the wider gate to overcome but he is unbeaten at the distance with two previous wins over the mile and winning form up to 1800m.
He has won his last three starts in style in Sydney, the latest over the 1800m with 59kg at Rosehill on June 17.
Back against a field of his own age at 1600m with 57kg makes him a genuine winning hope.
Two other runners are at single-figure Winx Guineas odds to win with the John Thompson-trained Crafty Eagle ($7.50) drawn out near the carpark and Tony Gollan’s local Queenslander Chairman ($8.50).
Gollan’s Brisbane-based Snitzel colt Chairman is nicely-bred and goes up to 1600m for the first time on Saturday.
He is proven at the Sunshine Coast track and was last seen scoring an impressive TL Cooney (1350m) win at Ipswich on Cup Day.
Richard & Will Freedman saddle-up the summer’s $2 million Magic Millions Guineas winner Fashion Legend ($14) from the far outside alley with the classy son of Deep Field last seen running third in the TL Cooney.
Others in the mix at generous double-figure offerings include the Chris Waller-trained Robusto ($10) and the potential value runner in the race Knight’s Choice ($13) chasing his fourth win on the bounce.
