Australia’s second richest thoroughbred race takes place at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday and our insider The Golden Eagle 2023 tips and best bets for the latest edition lucrative event for four-year-old horses can be found below.
The $10 million Golden Eagle was first run in 2019 and this year the fifth winner of the set weights showdown will be crowned when the Sydney highlight runs as Race 8 at 4:45pm (AEDT).
Part of Sydney’s ‘Grand Slam’ racing series, the Golden Eagle race is run and won over 1500m and this year we have 19 runners left in the mix following the early withdrawal of the injured Toorak Handicap champ Attrition.
Will the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained favourite Hawaii Five Oh salute off a good run in The Everest?
Can Amelia’s Jewel bounce back after her unplaced run in the Toorak with a better barrier this weekend or can the New Zealand-trained mare Legarto come away with another feature Australian win?
Read on to see the four-year-old we have on top of our Golden Eagle racing selections before heading over to Ladbrokes.com.au to lock in your picks.
To Win: #18 Legarto ($8 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Going for a touch of value in the Golden Eagle this year and have the visiting New Zealand-trained Group 1 winning mare Legarto on top at a nice price. She was last seen carrying 58.5kg to a Black-Type win over the mile at home and is one of the proven horses at the distance here. She is back down under and will relish a drop in weight to 55.5kg. Michael Dee comes aboard from a favourable barrier six draw. She was in Australia for the autumn and beat home the boys as a three-year-old at Flemington in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) so has class. It is a big field, there are plenty of form lines to consider, and this is her first Sydney start but think the price is too good to go past.
The Danger: #16 Amelia’s Jewel ($3.80) – BET NOW
Amelia’s Jewel is back into favouritism after easing out earlier in the week after coming up trumps with barrier five. She was drawn wide in the Toorak when ninth and is after atonement here. Before that Simon Miller’s WA star won back-to-back Group 2s in Melbourne to get her first interstate campaign underway in style. She beat a class field of older horses home in the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) at home last summer so has the ability to run a strong 1500m here. Right gate, Damian Lane knows her well, rock hard fit now and she can bounce back.
Best Roughie: #8 Strait Acer ($46 at time of publish) – BET NOW
There are a host of double-figure runners in this year’s Golden Eagle that could add value to the upset but one of the real outside chances that looks overs is the ultra-consistent Strait Acer with good lead-up form around some shorter-priced rivals. This Edward Cummings-trained son of Headwater won three on the trot in easier company before a close second at a similar price behind Vienna Princess in the $1 million Silver Eagle (1300m). Pericles was third in that race and think the form out of it can hold in the grand final. Has won at this distance, presents fit, drawn for a run in gate seven and can surprise.
THINK. IS THIS A BET YOU REALLY WANT TO PLACE?
