The Queen of Australian racing, Gai Waterhouse, has continued her impeccable run at the Gold Coast on the state’s biggest day of racing with the favourite Storm Boy saluting for the punters with a stylish 2024 Magic Millions 2YO Classic victory.
Waterhouse celebrated her incredible fifth victory in the now $3 million feature and first in partnership with Adrian Bott as unbeaten Justify colt Storm Boy demolished his rivals in the lucrative two-year-old’s race by two and a half lengths.
“The thrill is unbelievable,” Waterhouse, who has gone 23 years with a runner in the race, told the media post-victory.
Two-from-two heading into the six-furlong classic, the bay saluted on debut at Rosehill on December 2 before his big 2.4 length Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) win at Eagle Farm three weeks later.
He franked that form on Magic Millions Day with jockey Adam Hyeronimus continuing associations and getting the job done off a gun ride.
After jumping midfield Storm Boy ($2.50F) worked his way into the race settling second on the outside of the front runner Mishani Ego before letting down on the straight and storming away.
There was a notable gap back to second with Michael Freedman’s lasts start Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner 31 days earlier Highness, quick out the gates before settling fourth getting a gun run in transit, next best over the line.
In third rounding out the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic trifecta was the talented Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Trapeze Artist colt Spywire.
Storm Boy had every opportunity to get beaten but after going forward was simply too strong displaying a scintillating turn of speed over the late stages to add his name to the history books.
He now looks set for a big upcoming autumn carnival with the Group 1 $4.92 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 23 sure to be on the agenda.
Capitalist (2016) was the last juvenile to complete the Magic Millions 2YO Classic – Golden Slipper double.
