Zougotcha Heads 2024 Coolmore Classic Field & Odds

Chris Waller’s back-in-form mare Zougotcha is tipped to keep the autumn wins going as favourite for the Coolmore Classic 2024 this weekend in Sydney.

Rosehill Gardens is host to the Group $1 million Coolmore Classic (1500m) on Saturday with a star field assembled full of last start winning fillies and mares.

Donning the number one saddlecloth and leading the post-acceptance Coolmore Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is Zoustar four-year-old Zougotcha at $3.90 and firming.

James McDonald retains the ride on the six-time winner who is out to add to her good Rosehill record (4:2-0-0) on the back of a win fresh at the track in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m).

She is down a kilo still with the top-weight on Saturday (57kg) and is out to do the Millie Fox Stakes – Coolmore Classic double for the first time since Daysee Doom (2018).

Waller took out the Coolmore Classic last year with Espiona (2023) and saddles-up four runners in the field this year with Zougotcha joined by stablemates Vienna Princess ($15), Hinged ($15) and Madame Pommery ($34).

Despite a bumper field there are only two other single-figure hopefuls in Coolmore Classic betting currently with Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott’s dual Group 1 winning filly Tropical Squall ($7) and the consistent Ciaron Maher-trained Semana ($8).

No filly has beaten home the older mares in the Coolmore Classic since Tuesday Joy (2007) but there is money for Tropical Squall to break the drought.

The spring’s Flight Stakes winning daughter of Prized Icon was back to her best fresh at Randwick posting a narrow victory in the Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m).

The 1500m second-up will suit and she presents as a live chance despite the wide gate 17 draw for jockey Tim Clark to overcome.

Winning Rupert four-year-old Semana meanwhile has apprentice Dylan Gibbons aboard in gate 11 chasing her third win on the trot.

The $1 million Magic Millions Cup winning mare franked that form with a Group 3 Tristarc Stakes (1200m) win with two kilos more than she carries in the Coolmore.

At longer odds of $12 looking somewhat overlooked is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Revolutionary Miss, third in the Magic Millions Cup in January, who has won four of her past five starts including her latest two back-to-back.

Michael Dee partners the talented Russian Revolution four-year-old who won the Group 3 Frances Tressady and Group 3 Mannerism Stakes in Melbourne in February.

She was a 1.75 length winner over the 1400m at Caulfield with 59kg most recently and looks well placed heading up to Sydney now back to 55.5kg for the Group 1.

The Coolmore Classic 2024 is scheduled as Rosehill Race 8 at 4:35pm (AEDT) with full markets courtesy of Ladbrokes.com.au available by clicking here.
