UK Raider Post Impressionist Heads Tancred Stakes Field & Odds

The Tancred Stakes 2024 is one of two elite level autumn showdowns running at Rosehill on Saturday and it is UK raider Post Impressionist heading markets on the Sydney Cup lead-up.

The William Haggas-trained visitor made an immediate impact down under at this course last weekend saluting in the Group 3 NE Manion Cup by over three lengths.

He returns to the same track and trip for Saturday’s Group 1 $1.5 million Tancred Stakes (2400m) and is dominant favourite in a small field.

The early withdrawal of the Annabel Neasham-trained Little Mix (8) has just 10 remaining in the Tancred Stakes field, and Post Impressionist jumps from gate three with English hoop Tom Marquand in the saddle.

Marquand did a good job aboard the Teofilo five-year-old first-up down under and gets the chance at a Group 1 victory now on the quick back-up with Post Impressionist leading Tancred Stakes betting at $2.35 and firming through Ladbrokes.com.au.

Despite the small field a further three runners are also at single-figures for the win including the Chris Waller-trained import Buckaroo at $4.80.

Tommy Berry rides the Fastnet Rock entire who is also racing on successive Saturdays at Rosehill having run third only 1.27 lengths off Via Sistina in last weekend’s Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

He is up in distance now third-up and fit and remains a threat over the mile and a half despite being yet to win over further than 1676m.

Waller has prepared two former Tancred Stakes winners with Preferment (2016) and Verry Elleegant (2020).

Along with Buckaroo the master Sydney-based horseman also saddles-up his Churchill gelding More Felons from barrier two with James McDonald booked for the ride.

A dour stayer, More Felons has winning form up to 3381m and was a Melbourne Cup performer when 12th to Without A Fight in the world’s richest handicap race last spring.

He raced first-up here on February 27 posting a narrow win in the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) and will relish the extra distance second-up and fitter for the run now making him a value contender at Tancred Stakes odds of $11.

Shorter in the markets the other single-figure hopefuls are the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Military Mission ($9) and the James Cummings-trained Tom Kitten ($6.50).

Sandown Classic winning grey Military Mission was also a Melbourne Cup contender in 2023 when 10th and he has had two lead-up runs this prep.

At his latest last weekend, he ran 2.34 lengths fifth in the Ranvet with improvement expected out to 2400m now.

The Godolphin-raced Tom Kitten meanwhile is being kept safe in the markets to return to better form.

Jamie Kah rides the sole three-year-old in the mix partnering the Harry Angel colt for the first time.

Tom Kitten is after his first turf triumph since his elite level Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) success at Randwick last October and is another on the seven-day back-up off his sixth in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on Slipper Day.

He was only one and a half lengths off Riff Rocket in the Guineas with 56.5kg and comes back in weight to 54kg taking on the older horses now.

The Tancred Stakes is set to run as Rosehill Race 8 at 4:35pm (AEDT) on Saturday’s 10-race card with full markets from Ladbrokes.com.au available by clicking here.
