It is a wide-open edition of the 2024 Australasian Oaks on Robert Sangster Stakes Day in Adelaide this weekend with the airborne Wings Of Song narrow favourite to extend her winning streak in the Group 1.
Two elite level autumn races steal the show at Morphettville on Saturday including the three-year-old fillies facing off in the Group 1 $1 million Australasian Oaks (2000m).
A capacity field of young staying types is gathered and the bookies are having a hard time separating the best from the rest in Australasian Oaks betting.
Current top elect at $5.50 through Ladbrokes.com.au is Wings Of Song who has won her past six straight.
The Patrick Payne-trained daughter of Mendelssohn has been the picture of consistency over the summer including a host of Black-Type victories in Tasmanian taking out the Tasmanian Guineas, Thousand Guineas, Strutt Stakes, and Tasmanian Oaks in the Apple Isle.
She travelled to Adelaide last time out and was enormous from out in gate 13 of 14 to put two lengths on her closest rival here in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m).
Looking to be the first to do the Auraria Stakes – Australasian Oaks double since Sopressa (2018), there is money for Wings Of Song to salute again up in trip.
Two of her rivals follow closely at $6 on the second line of betting with Concello and Vibrant Sun looking the dangers.
Chris Waller’s Trapeze Artist filly Concello comes off a good third in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on Doncaster Day, which was run on a Heavy (9).
She gets another go at that distance with firmer going and is shorter in the markets this time to return to winning form and hand Waller his third Australasian Oaks trophy.
Mark Zahra rides nicely-bred The Autumn Sun filly Vibrant Sun for the Price/Kent stable with the Gorup 1 performed three-year-old last seen taking out the Group 3 Alexandra Stakes over the Moonee Valley mile on March 23.
She has had a little gap between runs now that should suit as she steps out over further looking to extend her brilliance over the extra metres now from wider out in gate 12.
Others at single-figures in the markets include Group 1 NZ Oaks winning Wrote filly Pulchritudinous ($8.50) now down under with Waterhouse & Bott and the in-form Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Coco Sun ($9) coming off back-to-back lead-up wins.
There are plenty of others biting at their heels chasing a value win including Group 3 Kembla Grang Classic winning Pierro filly Queen Of Dragons ($10) for Peter & Paul Snowden whose final lead-up was a Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes fourth at Rosehill and Peter Moody’s ultra-consistent Auraria Stakes runner-up Quickster ($10) looking for atonement.
