Race Day Caulfield Cup 2024 Field, Odds & Track Update: Muramasa, Positivity Scratched; Heavy (8) Course – Click here for more
The 2024 Caulfield Cup final field is now confirmed with a stellar line-up of spring stayers set to face off over the mile and half at Caulfield this weekend with many on way to the iconic Melbourne Cup race on the first Tuesday of November.
Chris Waller‘s in-form Fastnet Rock six-year-old Buckaroo – drawn ideally midfield in barrier eight – is early favourite to take out this year’s Group 1 $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) and hand his trainer a third trophy after earlier victories with Verry Elleegant (2020) and Durston (2022).
2024 Caulfield Cup Field at a Glance
- Buckaroo is the narrow favourite
- Might And Power winner Deny Knowledge is one of four mares in the line-up
- Ciaron Maher and Chris Waller are the best represented trainers with three runners and an emergency each
- Kalapour and Huetor are the oldest runners at eight-years-old
- Warp Speed from Japan is the only international in the field
Waller has four final Caulfield Cup acceptors with Buckaroo joined in the starting line-up by Land Legend and Valiant King, while Francesco Guardi is the third emergency.
Buckaroo has been game this prep winning Sydney’s Group 2 Chelmsford first-up over the mile before an impressive romp home by 3.5 lengths in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) here at Caulfiled.
His latest run had him crossing a neck back second to Via Sistina in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (1800m) at Flemington where he lost few admirers.
While yet to win over further than 1800m, the bookies are taking zero chances with Buckaroo who looks set to shine again with the ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira aboard on 54.5kg from the same gate that produced Waller’s first Caulfield Cup champion Verry Elleegant.
Land Legend is also at single-figures in the Caulfield Cup odds online through Ladbrokes.com.au on his way to a potential Melbourne Cup run on November 5 after coming up with the inside alley.
Zac Purton is down under for the Spring Cups on the French-bred Galileo five-year-old who carries 53kg including a 1kg penalty for his narrow Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) win with just 51kg in Sydney on Epsom Day.
Eliyass is the other key contender in the latest Caulfield Cup betting markets with the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Le Harve six-year-old to be ridden by Tim Clark.
There could be a drift however on the talented galloper who drew the extreme outside.
That said, two recent Caulfield Cup champions jumped from barrier 18 of 18 with Dunaden (2012) and Incentivise (2021).
Two back Clark guided this gun galloper to a Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) win and comes back aboard after Ethan Brown was in the saddle for the Turnbull Stakes third.
The Turnbull run had Eliyass 1.7 lengths beaten in a brave effort from barrier 16, and the horse presents fit now in his toughest test down under to date.
There are four mares in this year’s Caulfield Cup field looking to be the first since the ill-fated Verry Elleegant to beat home the boys in the mile and a half classic.
Of those, the best in the markets is the James Cummings-trained Zardozi who drew well with barrier 12.
Sydney Cup winning jockey Andrea Atzeni rides the consistent Kingman four-year-old for the Royal Blue brigade on just 51kg with Zardozi looking to break a notable drought going back to her Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes win back in March.
Last year’s VRC Oaks champion has been competitive in plenty since however including placings in the ATC Oaks (2nd) and Vinery Stud (3rd) as a filly last prep.
This season her form has been building and she was last seen running a nostril-flare back second to Land Legend in The Metrop.
The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained daughter of The Autumn Sun Coco Sun drawn wide in the second outside alley, recent Naturalism winner Positivity in on the 50kg lightweight in barrier nine, and Deny Knowledge are the other Caulfield Cup mares on Saturday.
Deny Knowledge chases back-to-back Group 1 wins at the track after Anthony & Sam Freedman‘s Pride Of Dubai seven-year-old claimed a three-quarter upset over beaten odds-on favourite Mr Brightside in last weekend’s Might And Power (2000m).
She was excellent at weight-for-age there with 57kg, will relish coming right back to just 50.5kg for jockey Craig Newitt now, and should thrive on the quick turnaround making her a genuine value contender.
She did suffer something of an early blow drawing wide out in gate 17 so will have to work to cross and get into position early to be any chance of an on-speed runner for her rivals to catch.
Warp Speed is the sole international with the Japanese raider on his way to the Melbourne Cup looking to be the third Caulfield Cup winner from Japan and he too drew wider out in gate 19.
Other notable Caulfield Cup hopes in 2024 include Ciaron Maher’s European import Sayedaty Sadaty having his first start in Australia from barrier two and the winter’s 10.5 length Queensland Derby champ Warmonger in the race he’s been set for jumping from barrier 16.
