The punters are giving Group 1 winner Amelia’s Jewel another go with the Simon Miller-trained mare heading The Goodwood 2024 betting markets in South Australia this weekend.
The Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival action continues at Morphettville with the Group 1 $1 million The Goodwood (1200m) stealing the show.
The Goodwood field is down to 15 runners with two of the original final acceptors withdrawn.
The Annabel Neasham-trained Learning To Fly (14) is out after presenting below par early in the week with the youngster to be rested ahead of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival majors.
Also out is the James Cummings-trained Vilana (16) who was drawn wide out.
Updated The Goodwood odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au have dual The Quokka runner-up Amelia’s Jewel on top at $4 to return to winning form.
She presents third-up and fit after back-to-back seconds at home in Perth, which she is out to atone for her.
The four-year-old daughter of Siyouni has a lovely 1200m record (4:2-2-0) and is looking for her first win since victory over Pride Of Jenni in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) in Melbourne last September.
That form has been firmly franked with the runner-up, Pride Of Jenni, continuing on to win a host of elite races including her historic 6.5 length demolition job in Randwick’s Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 13.
Amelia’s Jewel jumps from gate nine with Damian Lane to ride as she looks to be the first The Goodwood favourite to salute since Black Heart Bart (2016).
The danger occupying the second line of The Goodwood betting at $5 and firming is the early market mover Benedetta in an ideal gate three draw.
Star hoop Ms Jamie Kah partners Jason Warren’s consistent Hellbent mare with the four-year-old coming off a devastatingly close third only a quarter-length behind the winner in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) a fortnight back.
Prior to that she was good winning the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) here, which followed back-to-back Group 1 fourths in the Oakleigh and Newmarket in Melbourne under two lengths beaten each time.
Benedetta ticks plenty of boxes including previous winning form at the track, a 50% winning strike-rate at The Goodwood distance, and the fitness edge making her a notable contender to watch out for.
The other major player at a current quote of %5.50 i9s the Dion Luciani-trained Oscar’s Fortune.
The ‘Wizard of the West’, William Pike, travels to Adelaide to stick with the talented three-year-old Rich Enuff gelding who has won five of his nine starts to date.
The million-dollar earner is yet to win over further than 1100m, but has been competitive in his three 1200m assignments to date with two seconds and a third.
He was second past the post behind The Quokka champ Overpass in last summer’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), beat Amelia’s Jewel home in the Group 3 Roma Cup (1100m) two back, and comes off a Quokka third at Ascot.
Oscar’s Fortune carted 56.5kg that day in the $5 million Perth slot race and drops to just 53.5kg in The Goodwood making him a big lightweight hope.
A further two runners are also under double-figures for the win with the rails-drawn I Am Me ($7.50) to be ridden by Blake Shinn and the Nick Ryan-trained Jukebox four-year-old Johnny Rocker ($8.50).
The Ciaron Maher-trained I Am Invincible mare, I Am Me, has plenty of top form interstate including Group 1 seconds in the Manikato and Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes from the spring.
This prep she has been top four twice when resuming with a William Reid third to the since-retired Imperatriz at The Valley before her Morphettville debut when fourth 1.4 lengths away in the Robert Sangster.
At longer odds the outsider hopes that could prove value on the weekend include the Mitchell Freedman-trained Exosphere filly Skybird ($12) coming off a Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes win by two lengths at this track and trip from April 27, and Phillip Stokes’ Group 1 Robert Sangster winner Climbing Star ($16) who looks forgotten in the markets.
The Goodwood 2024 is set to run as Morphettville Race 8 at 4:00pm (ACST) on Saturday’s nine-race card with full markets from Ladbrokes.com.au available by clicking here.
