The spring is beckoning for Godolphin’s now two-time winning colt, Broadsiding, who easily accounted for his rivals like the odds-on favourite he was with a demolition job in the 2024 JJ Atkins results at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Champion hoop James McDonald continued his incredible year posting his 98th career Group 1 and 19th for the season giving a big salute to the punters as he crossed the line first aboard Broadsiding in the $1 million Ladbrokes JJ Atkins (1600m).
Too Darn Hot colt Broadsiding added the JJ Atkins to the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) trophy he collected in Sydney over the autumn on Heavy going and made it four wins on the trot.
Last time out the progressive two-year-old took out the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) a fortnight back, and he returned a fortnight later to complete the juvenile’s double of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
From a favourable barrier two draw McDonald manoeuvred the horse with skill, getting his mount into the ideal position fifth just off the pace and ready to pounce.
He slid closer around the home bend, and once on the straight it was all Broadsiding.
The gun galloper got to the front runners with 300m to travel before racing away for a huge finish to easily account for his rivals.
“He’s what you love to look for in a two-year-old,” winning trainer, James Cummings, said after picking up his 49th career Group 1.
“He’s got that dynamic motor.
“He’s a colt I think deserves a lot of praise.”
On the line Broadsiding ($1.60) had four and a quarter-lengths to spare on the runner-up, the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Snitzel colt Bittercreek ($9), who improved on his fourth in the BRC Sires’.
In third adding value to the JJ Atkins trifecta was Annabel Neasham’s untapped Blue Point colt Bosustow ($26) who was good holding for the placing after an on-pace run throughout.
Cummings was full of praise for both Broadsiding and his hoop saying McDonald rode the JJ Atkins winner “magnificently”.
“James was so good, he was determined to get that good spot,” Cummings said.
“He rode the horse magnificently.”
It looks onwards and upwards next prep now for Broadsiding who is already being talked about as a genuine contender for October’s Group 1 $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley.
Current all-in 2024 Cox Plate odds online have Broadsiding at $10 for the win and can be found in full at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au by clicking here.
