The James Cummings-trained super colt Broadsiding is out to extend his picket fence this weekend as the odds-on favourite in barrier 9 of 11 in the 2024 Caulfield Guineas final field.
Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse comes to life on Saturday with the card headlined by a small but class field of promising three-year-old milers facing off in the Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
After his sixth win on the trot, Too Darn Hot colt Broadsiding is again the one to beat heading the Caulfield Guineas odds online at a short $1.55 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Brilliant hoop James McDonald continues associations on the Godolphin-raced galloper as he chases fourth Caulfield Guineas winning ride and his first since Golden Mile in 2022.
Saturday marks Broadsiding’s first Melbourne assignment since a fourth on debut at Ballarat back in February.
He has gone from strength-to-strength since enjoying a Group 1 1600m double as a two-year-old winning Sydney’s Champagne Stakes and the J.J. Atkins in Brisbane.
Fresh he went straight to Rosehill’s Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) and came away as history’s inaugural first-up winner with a narrow but convincing victory over The Everest-bound Traffic Warden.
Saturday sees him back up to his pet distance which he is three-from-three over to date, and the markets reflect how strong a contender he is down south.
The danger occupying the second line of Caulfield Guineas betting at $8 and the only other current single figure hope is Angel Capital for Clinton McDonald.
Ben Melham partners the in-form Harry Angel colt from barrier seven third-up on the weekend with the horse coming off a half-length win in the Guineas Prelude.
Helmet (2011) was the last three-year-old to complete the Caulfield Guineas Prelude – Caulfield Guineas double Angel Capital is after this weekend.
He has a task ahead however if he is to turn the tables on Broadsiding after finishing over sixth back ninth behind Saturday’s top elect in Eagle Farm’s Group 2 Sires’ back in June.
Mayfair meanwhile is at $11 for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott with the perennial placegetter coming off a string of promising top three runs including a third at big odds in the Golden Rose narrowly beaten.
Waterhouse incredibly is yet to train a Caulfield Guineas winner and the stable launches a two-horse assault on the field this season with Mayfair joined by Wanaruah ($15) in the starting line-up.
Team Hayes‘ Group 2 Stutt Stakes winner Evaporate chasing a fifth straight win and the untapped Chris Waller-trained Written Tycoon colt Private Life both at a current quote of $13 present as the other key contenders.

Race comments
The Group 1 Caulfield Guineas where BROADSIDING (1) is deservedly very short in betting. He became the first horse to win the Golden Rose first-up from a spell and charged home to beat some top-class colts in the process. Already a dual Group 1 winner at a mile, he's got a fair bit on these and even bad luck will struggle to beat him. MAYFAIR (5) stuck on very well for third in the Golden Rose and was excellent prior giving 6kg to subsequent Flight Stakes winner Lady Shenandoah. He'll give the favourite something to catch again. ANGEL CAPITAL (4) has done nothing wrong in two Melbourne lead up wins. He can only run well, as can EVAPORATE (3) who keeps winning. TROPICUS (9) might be the improver out to a mile from an inside gate.
