2024 Golden Eagle Barrier Draw, Joliestar New Favourite in Gate 11

The official The Golden Eagle 2024 barrier draw has been confirmed with the Chris Waller-trained Joliestar firming into favouritism for Saturday’s $10 million feature after drawing barrier 11.

All 20 barrier positions for this year’s $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) were allocated during a special event on Tuesday evening.

Former top elect, Japan’s Group 1 winning mare Ascoli Piceno, suffered an early blow with barrier 17 for jockey Joao Moreira and has eased out to the $5.50 second favourite in Golden Eagle betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.

The Japanese finished on top last year with Obamburumai (2023) saluting from barrier two last Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

Joliestar gets the chance to return to winning form off a seventh placing in the $20 million The Everest with the Thousand Guineas winning mare to be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy.

Last year’s Golden Eagle winning gate (2) is drawn on Saturday by the James Cummings-trained Tom Kitten who is a $9 shot for Godolphin who ran second and third in the 2023 trifecta.

To date, no barrier has produced more than one Golden Eagle winner since the race was inaugurated in 2019.

Tom Kitten is out to go back-to-back for barrier 2 in the Golden Eagle after Japan's Obamburumai won from the gate last year

Ben Melham rides Tom Kitten from the favourable alley with the horse coming off a string of good lead-up runs including an Epsom second and King Charles III third behind Ceolwulf at elite level over the Randwick mile.

French raider Lazzat, an undefeated six-time winning son of Territories, is the early market mover now into Golden Eagle odds of $6 to salute in Australia from barrier 12 and remain unbeaten.

There has also been money coming for Bjorn Baker‘s Stradbroke winner Stefi Magnetica who is at $9.50 after drawing barrier 4 which produced Kolding for his 2019 success.

The Ciaron Maher-trained Southport Tycoon, winner of the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes and last start third placegetter to Overpass in the lucrative Sydney Stakes, is at $11 to overcome his wide gate 15 draw with Craig Williams booked to ride.

Gary Portelli‘s Encap ($16) will start from the inside alley, while the far outside draw was allocated to the Team Hawkes-trained Makarena ($41) coming off a third in the $2 million The Invitation.

While the barriers obviously have a big impact on the Golden Eagle betting markets, the distance and make-up of the Rosehill course with a fairly decent run from the 1500m start allows wider-drawn horses with a bit of early speed the chance to slot into a winning position in the opening stages of the race.

Only one Golden Eagle winner has jumped from a double-digit gate so far with I Wish I Win overcoming gate 10 in 2022.

The 2024 Golden Eagle runs as Rosehill Race 8 at 4:45pm (AEDT).

Race comments

ASCOLI PICENO (19) Japanese trained mare who brings impeccable ratings here. First run back she defeated a strong lineup when taking out the G3 Keisei Hai Autumn Handicap at Nakayama over 1600m on September 8. Expecting Moreira to weave his magic from the sticky barrier and figure prominently. JOLIESTAR (16) drifted back early before savaging the line late when seventh in the G1 The Everest at Randwick over 1200m on October 19. Ready for the 1500m now and is a genuine top-three prospect. LAZZAT (12) French gelding by Territories undefeated in six starts. Has a smart record over this trip and maps to get the right run after scoring a 3 len victory in the G1 MRC De Cheest over 1300m at Deauville on August 4. Has settled in well by all reports and can keep his unbeaten record intact. STEFI MAGNETICA (15) won the Stradbroke Hcp last prep and has looked sharp in two runs back. Failed to sprint with them when ninth over 1200m in the G1 The Everest at Randwick last time out. Each-way.
